Saturday, August 1 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver.

Saturday, August 1 (2-3:30 p.m.) Summer Quilling Fun – Come in from the heat and create. Drop in to learn some basic paper-quilling techniques and make your own card. While supplies last.

Saturdays, August 1 and 29 and Sunday, August 9 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos®? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Pick-up begins Monday, August 3 August Craft Kit Pick-Up – Celebrate August with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7.  Registration begins July 27.

Monday, August 3 (2-3:30 p.m.) Make a Tie-Dye Shirt – Bring a new plain white shirt for a fun tie-dye twist at the Friends Pavilion. In case of inclement weather, the program will be on August 14. Grades 5-8. Registration begins July 27.

Monday, August 3 (7-8 p.m.) Tax Planning for Retirement: How Tax Planning Changes Through the Four Stages of Retirement – Pre-Retirees often don’t understand how taxes work in retirement, but they’re acutely aware of the size of their tax bill each year. Learn the critical tax questions you must answer before retiring. Presented by Dave Herwerden, WestPoint Wealth Management. Please register.

Tuesday, August 4 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Memory Disco – Join us for a program designed for individuals experiencing cognitive decline. This program uses silent disco headphones to bring music, movement and joyful memories to life. Registration begins July 28.

Tuesday, August 4 (11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.) Free Skin Spot Checks with Apex Skin – Join us for educational information on skin safety and free skin spot checks with a licensed provider from Apex Skin. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about skin health, sun safety and early detection of skin cancer. Please register.

Tuesday, August 4 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Paula J. Johnson, “Julia Child’s Kitchen” – Join us for a conversation that’s sure to warm your heart, as we delve into the legacy of cooking icon Julia Child with Smithsonian curator and public historian Paula J. Johnson. Please register.

Tuesday, August 4 (6-7:30 p.m.) and Saturday, August 8 (10:30 a.m.-noon) and Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins one week before each session.

Tuesday, August 4 (6-8 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Evelyn’s Jewelry Workshop – Bring in jewelry to repair or remake into something more modern. You can also just come and make a jewelry item of your choice. Please register.

Tuesday, August 4 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum: Spanish Civil War – Dan Zeiser joins the World at War Forum again to discuss the Spanish Civil War. Between 1936 and 1939 Spanish Republicans and Nationalist, led by Francisco Franco. Fought each other for the control of Spain. Please register.

Wednesday, August 5 (6-6:45 p.m.) Meet Your Makerspace! – What is the Makerspace? What can you make?  Come and learn all about the equipment available and what is required to use it! Registration begins June 24.

Wednesday, August 5 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Wednesday, August 5 (7-8:30 p.m.) Trivia Night: Sea to Shining Sea – Celebrate America250 with a night of fun Americana trivia. Register solo or in teams of 2-5. There will be music, fun, friendly competition, and prizes for the winning team! Ages 13 to Adult. Please register.

Thursday, August 6 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Summer Salads with Susan – Learn from Susan Aldrich how to make three amazing salads with homemade dressing. Enjoy lunch with homemade bread. Registration begins July 30.

Thursday, August 6 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Thursday, August 6 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: iPhone and iPad Help Session – Have quick questions about your iPhone or iPad? Need help with basic features or apps? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips.

Thursday, August 6 (6-8 p.m.) You & Me Printmaking – Create and print your own design with the linocut (linoleum block) technique. Grades 6-12 with an accompanying adult. Adults, please register yourself and list the youth’s name on your registration. Registration begins July 30.

Friday, August 7 (2-3:45 p.m.) Make Snoof Puppets – Learn how to make a ladder stitch, follow a simple pattern, and make your own original Snoof puppet. Grades 8-12. Registration begins July 31.

Saturday, August 8 (10:30-11 a.m.) Outdoor Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs, and play outside in the Friends Pavilion. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, August 10 (4:30-5:15 p.m.) Tinkering with Tinkercad – Explore 3D design with Tinkercad. Learn the basics, start a project, and return to the Makerspace later to finish. No printing during the session. Grades 3-6. Registration begins August 3.

Monday, August 10 (6:30-8 p.m.) A Skeptic’s Guide to AI: Understand the Technology and Learn How to Turn It Off – Tess Wilson of the Library Freedom Project will cut through the hype to understand what these technologies are, how they work, and what they can and cannot do. This presentation will take place on Zoom. Participants will have the opportunity to watch the presentation and interact with the presenter in our Porter Room. Please register.

Monday, August 10 (7-8 p.m.) Earth “kind” Meetup Group – Meet with other veg/plant-based-curious individuals to discover new flavors, new foods and more ways to be kind to yourselves and to our earth. This group will meet most months on the second Monday of the month. Various topics will be discussed. No registration required.

Tuesday, August 11 (10-11 a.m.) The Classic Radio Hour: The Shadow (1930) – We hope you’ll tune in for a trip down Memory Lane. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows! This month, we’ll be listening to “The Shadow,” a mystery/suspense series about a mysterious vigilante. Please register.

Tuesday, August 11 (1-2 p.m.) LEGO® Robotics – Use LEGO® WeDo software to build structures and learn about robotics concepts such as: gears, levers, pulleys, coding, motors, and more. Presented by Sylvan Learning Center. Grades 2-5. Registration begins August 4.

Tuesday August 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Night Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “Ask Again, Yes” by Mary Beth Keane. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option, you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Wednesday, August 12 (12-1 p.m.) Cooking with Chef Garrett – Chef Garrett will be joining us to demonstrate a Sicilian pepper recipe  and share stories about his recent trip to Sicily. Incorporate this quick, easy side dish into your weekly meal plan. Registration begins August 5.

Wednesday, August 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “H is for Hope” by Elizabeth Kolbert. Please register.

Thursday, August 13 (7-8:15 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Club – This month’s title is “The Giver of Stars” by JoJo Moyes. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Friday, August 14 (3-3:30 p.m.) Family Storytime: A Summer Fair – Go to the fair with books, songs and activities to celebrate America 250 at this family storytime. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration necessary.

Saturday, August 15 (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) Forest Therapy Walk – Join certified Forest Therapy Guide Catherine Mangan on a forest therapy walk at Bradley Woods Reservation. Must be 18 years old or older. Registration begins August 8. No pets are allowed on the walks. Registration begins August 8.

Sunday, August 16 (2-3 p.m.) Art Smarts: Christo and Jeanne-Claude – Explore the works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own. Grades 4-6. Registration begins August 9.

Sunday, August 16 (3-4:30 p.m.) Women in History Presents Sally Hemings – Women in History presents a powerful portrayal of Sally Hemings, the enslaved woman whose life was closely connected to Thomas Jefferson. Explore her experiences, the controversy surrounding their relationship, and the evidence that continues to shape our understanding of her life. Please register.

Pick up begins Monday, August 17 Spice it Up! Take-Home Kit: Cumin – Each kit will contain a sample of the featured spice, some background on the spice and a couple of recipes! This kit will contain cumin. Registration opens August 10.

Monday, August 17 (1-2 p.m.)  True Crime Book Club – This month’s title is “The Sinners All Bow,” by Kate Winkler Dawson. Please register.

Monday, August 17 (6-8 p.m.) Family LEGO® Night – Gather the family and enjoy building LEGO® kits together. Use our bricks or bring your own project. Join the community as we share ideas and build LEGO® creations together. Register each participating person separately. All ages are welcome.

Monday, August 17 (7-8 p.m.) How Current Events Can Influence Your Investment Behavior – Learn how current events can influence your investment behavior, and could lead to disastrous results. Presented by Les Szarka, CFP®, ChFC®, CEO Szarka Financial. Please register.

Wednesday, August 19 (7-8 p.m.) Nostalgic Showcase Presents: The History of Fleischer Studios through Harvey Comics – Learn the history behind one of America’s greatest animation studios, Fleischer Studios, from its roots to its downfall, to the rise of Harvey Comics. Wednesday, August 19 (7-8 p.m.) Trivia of the 1960s: An Interactive Lecture – Dr. Joel Keller, the Doc of Rock and Roll, will lead listeners through a guided tour of the 1960s, told through the lens of trivia. Come explore this groovy decade with us. Please register.

Thursday, August 20 (6-8 p.m.) The Art of Rest – Learn the science of sleep and practical sleep hygiene strategies during this two-hour workshop with registered 500-hour yoga instructor, Adriana Leone.

Friday, August 21 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Hoop, Hop, Hooray! – Drop by the Friends Pavilion for an hour of active fun with our jump ropes and hula hoops! Learn classic jump rope rhymes, practice your hula hoop skills, and challenge yourself to keep moving. It’s all about fun, fitness, literacy, and play. Ages 5-10, siblings welcome. Saturday, August 22 (10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.) Medicare Ins and Outs – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? Attend a program by OSHIIP, the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program. OSHIIP volunteer counselor Jim Langan will discuss your Medicare coverage options. Please register.

Saturday, August 22 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun! – This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft, battle your librarian, or play a Pokémon Bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards! No registration required. Ages 6-11.

Monday, August 24 (10-10:45 a.m.) STEAM Ahead: Beautiful Butterflies – Together we’ll explore the night sky, discover some constellations, and make our own telescopes. Ages 4-6, up to kindergarten. Registration begins August 17.

Monday, August 24 (11 a.m.-12 p.m.) Hair Care and Styling – Join master stylist and owner of The Point Salon and Spa, Chelsea Holley, for an informative session about hair styling, care, and maintenance. Chelsea is a dedicated curl specialist with a passion for color theory and education. Registration begins July 24.

Monday, August 24 (7-8 p.m.) Managing Your IRA and Avoiding Mistakes – Alex Menassa, MT, CPA, JD, SFP, of Szarka Financial will explore strategies that address market volatility, considerations related to Required Minimum Distributions and strategies to simplify estate settlement and transfer of assets.

Tuesday, August 25 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Beronda Montgomery,“When Trees Testify” – Join us for a riveting conversation with award-winning biologist Beronda Montgomery as we discuss her book, “When Trees Testify: Science, Wisdom, History, and America’s Black Botanical Legacy.” Streamed live. Wednesday, August 26 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Every Color in the Crayon Box – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! For adults and teens age 16 and up. Please register.

Thursday, August 27 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Lucy Foley, “Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel” – Join us for a thrilling conversation with acclaimed author Lucy Foley as we delve into her brand-new Miss Marple mystery. Streamed live. Please register.

Saturday, August 29 (2-3 p.m.) Organic Lawn Care – Learn about the hidden dangers in using common lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides and how to reduce or replace them with safer organic and natural products. Presented by Mel Hauser of Good Nature Organic Lawn Care. Registration begins July 30.

Monday, August 31 (2-3 p.m.) Your Ticket to Good Health – What is a good portion size? How many calories am I consuming? Bring in a favorite package containing a food label, and learn step by step how to make the right decisions for your nutrition. Registration begins July 31.
