Westlake Police Patrolman John Jereb saved a life on his way home from work last night.
Officer Jereb, a 24-year veteran of the department, was off duty but still vigilant when he noticed an unusual amount of smoke in the Detroit-Bassett Road area.
He traced the smoke to a nearby residence and, after alerting on-duty police and fire units, banged on the doors and windows of the home.
Ptl. Jereb awoke the lone occupant, a 76 year old male, who was house sitting for a friend.
The male safely exited the residence while the police and fire departments were responding. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
