Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s March, 2018 calendar of events:

Thursdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 (4-5:15 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 (6:30-8 p.m.) and Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28 (4-5:30 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with one of the reading therapy dogs! Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Thursday, March 1 (7-8:30 p.m.) One Community Reads: Legal Counsel and Housing – “You have the right to an attorney:” Everyone is familiar with the Miranda Rights thanks to civics classes and television crime shows. However, Miranda rights only apply in serious criminal cases. There is no such constitutional right to legal representation in housing cases. In the book Evicted you learned about eight families as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Did you know 10,000 evictions are filed annually in Cleveland each year, and most of those people do not have assistance of counsel? Learn more about Evicted related problems in Northeast Ohio and legal solutions our community can work on together to solve one of 21st-century America’s most devastating problems. Please register.

Saturday, March 3 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturdays, March 3 and 31 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Saturdays March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (3-4:30 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 5-8.

Mondays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Monday, March 5 (4-5:30 p.m.) Tinkercad I: Design 3D Objects – Learn how to use Tinkercad, a free online program you can use to design your own 3D objects which you can later 3D print! Please register.

Tuesdays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 (2-3 p.m.) Conversational Spanish – Please join us to learn Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation with an expert instructor. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 6 (6:30-8 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Coffee and Chat – Join our interactive support group and meet other families facing similar struggles. Free, supervised children’s activities are available, but adults and children must register separately. Topic: Parents AND Siblings Chat about the Needs of Siblings – This program is for parents and elementary-aged siblings (7-12 years) to attend together. Families will work on exercises designed to better communicate the needs of a sibling who has a brother or sister who is struggling. Tuesday, March 6 (7:15-8:30 p.m.) Researching Your Roots – An intro to Ancestry.com and other online resources you can use to research your family. Bring names and dates of relatives — there will be time for individual research during class. Please register.

Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, March 7 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28 (3:45-5 p.m.) Tween Scene – Weekly hang-out for 5th and 6th graders ONLY! No registration required.

Friday, March 9 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) and Saturday, March 10 (9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids Music Therapy & More^SM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) are welcome to attend. Join us for a program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. Friday, March 9 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday – Join Mrs. K as we explore our world! In March we’ll investigate the science of clouds and weather. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take home project. Ages 4-7. Registration begins February 2.

Saturday, March 10 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, March 10 (1 and 2:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Elementary Experiences^SM – For children ages 7-12 years and their families who are struggling in an area of development. The workshop will include dance fundamentals, rhythm and movement games, as well as an introduction to basic ballet positions and choreography from the upcoming performance of Peter Pan. Parents, siblings, fairies and pirates will enjoy dancing together as they are led by NPB staff who are specially trained to work with children who have physical and behavioral needs. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet a ballerina.

Sunday, March 11 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration required.

Sunday, March 11 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 3-6. Registration begins March 4.

Monday, March 12 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) and Saturday, March 24 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Monday, March 12 (7-8 p.m.) ACT vs SAT – Presentation on the differences between the ACT and the SAT including what both tests look like, what’s tested and how they’re scored in order to best help you decide which (or both) test is more appropriate to take. Geared towards students in grades 10-12 and their parents. Registration begins March 5.

Monday, March 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Custom Iron-Ons with Silhouette Cameo – Learn how to use the Silhouette Cameo, and bring a t-shirt or other fabric item you’d like to iron custom designs onto! (Canvas and other rough fabrics don’t work well). Please register.

Tuesday, March 13 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, Wi-Fi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, March 13 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K as we unwind at the end of the day with quiet stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 13 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In March we’ll discuss Evicted by Matthew Desmond.

Thursday, March 15 (5:30-6:30 p.m.) SLIME! – SLIME! What kind of Slime can you make? Spend an hour making different kinds of slime to use and take home. Grades 7-12. Registration begins March 8.

Thursday, March 15 (Preschool session: 6:30 p.m.) and Friday, March 16 (Preschool session: 9:30 a.m. and Toddler Session: 11:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids Teach Me to Play^SM – For families and their children (Toddler: ages 18 months-2 years and Preschool: ages 3-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Friday, March 16 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Got Science? – Sink or Float: Guess the densities of different objects and place them in water to test your predictions. Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins March 9.

Saturday, March 17 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, March 17 (11 a.m.-Noon) and Monday, March 26 (7-8:30 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s new 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print. Please register.

Saturday, March 17 (4-5:30 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – This month’s topic: Optical Illusions! Grades 3-5. Registration begins March 10.

Sunday, March 18 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Nellie O’Malley – Nellie O’Malley, an Irish immigrant, would most probably celebrate her Irish heritage, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. We’ll also celebrate with a craft and games! Ages 6-11. Registration begins March 11.

Monday, March 19 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group: Economics & Investing – Former U.S. Treasury Department economist Dr. Kevin Jacques discusses the basics of the U.S. economy and economic policy, how they influence the U.S. stock market and how individual investors can make better investment decisions. Please register.

Tuesday, March 20 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Talk to Me – Employers are People Too – Are you unsure about how to speak to a current or future employer? This class gives some tips for successful conversations so you can make the right impression. No registration required.

Tuesday, March 20 (7-8 p.m.) Collection and Care of Vinyl Records – Charles from My Mind’s Eye Records in Lakewood will discuss what to look for when buying or selling records. He will also talk about storage and upkeep to ensure that your collection can last through generations. Please register.

Thursday, March 22 (7-8 p.m.) Wow Factor: 150 Years of Bold Clothes – An overview of The Western Reserve Historical Society’s exhibit featuring showstopping outfits worn by Clevelanders dating back to 1853, including local designers. Please register.

Friday, March 23 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Saturday, March 24 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Celebrate National Craft Month! – Come celebrate National Craft Month with the Youth Services Department. There will be a variety of supplies provided for you to make your own crafts. For kids of all ages. Bring your imagination and get crafty with us. No registration required.

Saturday, March 24 (2-3 p.m.) Queen Isabel: Gender and Power During Spain’s Golden Age – Dr. Elizabeth Lehfeldt from Cleveland State University will discuss the reign of Queen Isabel I of Castile and Leon, and how gender and shared sovereignty shaped her ability to rule. Please register.

Saturday, March 24 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Sunday, March 25 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Sunday, March 25 (2-3:30 p.m.) Sensory-Friendly Movie – A sensory-friendly environment including more light, less sound and the option to move around the room will help children with special needs and their families enjoy this free movie screening. All ages. No registration required.

Monday, March 26-Saturday, April 7 DIY Peep Diorama – Choose your favorite book or literary character and then create a diorama about it using Peeps! Stop by the Youth Services Department beginning March 26 to pick up your “starter peep” and instructions. Return your diorama by April 7 at 6 p.m. Dioramas will be on display throughout National Library Week (April 8-14).

Monday, March 26 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses that imitate animals and nature. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, March 26 (7-8:30 p.m.) Beekeeping Basics – Learn the basics of beekeeping: how to set up your hive, how to move bees into their home, how to feed them, the tools of the trade and more. Presented by the Greater Cleveland Beekeepers Association. Children 12 and up are welcome with an adult. Please register.

Tuesday, March 27 (2-3 p.m.) Travel Club: England – Come and hear about fun and exciting places to see, both well-known and lesser known, in England. Registration begins February 25.

Wednesday, March 28 (7-8 p.m.) Alternatives to Cable TV – Frustrated with cable service? This program will help you sort through the variety of viewing alternatives available. Learn about digital media players, streaming services, and additional options. Registration begins February 26.

Thursday, March 29 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Registration begins February 27.

Thursday, March 29 (7-8:30 p.m.) One Community Reads Recovery Resources – As part of our One Community Reads program, Nabil Pervaiz of Recovery Resources will be presenting on how the trifecta of addiction, substance abuse, and mental illness relates to eviction and poverty, the vicious cycle it creates, and how it can be overcome.
