Disability Awareness Week at Redwood Elementary School in Avon Lake March 19-23

We are excited to announce Redwood Elementary School’s first “Disability Awareness Week” March 19-23 at the school in Avon Lake, 32967 Redwood Blvd.

Throughout the week, students will participate in a variety of events and activities to help promote the theme, “It is okay to be me.”

The school also sold t-shirts to raise funds for Connecting for Kids. Westlake-based Connecting for Kids is a nonprofit with a mission of providing education and support for families with concerns about their child. www.connectingforkids.org

On Monday, March 19 at 9:15 a.m. in the gym we will kick off Disability Awareness Week with an assembly featuring Breanna Sprenger, as our guest speaker. Breanna is a sophomore at Avon High School and is a U.S. Paralympic swimmer. Please watch video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_ryRaiJ-yI

On Tuesday, March 20, students are encouraged to donate $1 and wear a silly hat.

Another highlight of the week is Wednesday, March 21, when grade levels will be cycling through the gym throughout the day to participate in various modules that allow the students to experience what it is like to have varying disabilities and needs (from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 12:45 to 2:50 p.m.).

On Thursday, March 22, Disability Awareness Week will be promoted in the classrooms through books and discussions.

On Friday, March 23, we will close the week by enjoying a performance from the Elyria High School Sign Choir from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This choir is comprised of students both with special needs and exceptional needs. A check with donation amount will be presented to Connecting for Kids. Redwood students will wear their t-shirts, as well.

Redwood Elementary School (grades K-4) also houses the district’s LEAPS (Learning Early and Parenting Skills) program that provides instruction to preschool students with special needs. We also incorporate preschool children who demonstrate age-appropriate overall development/skills.
