On 8/6/18 at 9:51Pm officers responded to the area of Columbia and Sperry Rds to investigate a motor vehicle accident. A Ford Explorer struck another vehicle from behind. The operator of the SUV was leaning against the vehicle smoking a cigarette when officers arrived. They immediately noticed that the 49yo female from North Olmsted was slurring her words and having a difficult time maintaining her balance. When asked how much she had to drink, the driver said “a lot.” She was field tested and arrested for OVI, fail to maintain an assured clear distance, and child endangering. The latter charge was because the female had her 6yo granddaughter in the vehicle with her. The juvenile was turned over to a family member who arrived on scene. The intoxicated driver later submitted to a breath test and was found to be almost 2x the legal limit.
Home Burglarized
On 8/6/18 a resident on Willow Run reported that they returned home at about 1:30am to find that their home had been burglarized. Items were missing from inside and a 2005 Silver Nissan Quest was stolen from the driveway. Detectives are investigating the break in. The vehicle has not been recovered to date.
Meth Suspect Goes in Circles
On 8/6/18 at 8:50Am officers responded to a report of a silver Ford driving in circles at Crocker Park. The concerned citizen caller said that the driver appeared high. The described vehicle was stopped in the area of I90 at Crocker. The male driver was shirtless and sweating. He exhibited signs of being under the influence of drugs and could not perform field tests. Due to his erratic behavior, an ambulance was called. The 30yo from Elyria admitted to snorting methamphetamine and drinking an unknown clear liquid. He was transported to the hospital and was charged with OVI, driving under suspension, and traffic violations. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Busy Day for DUIs
8/6 was a busy day for daytime intoxicated drivers. At 3:09PM WPD received a call from a concerned citizen reporting that a female in a vehicle at Speedway Gas Station on Dover and Center Ridge Rds had asked her to blow into her vehicle alcohol detecting interlock. This device is usually installed by court order due to previous alcohol offenses. It will not allow the vehicle to start until a sober person has blown into the machine. Luckily, no one would help the 59yo from North Olmsted bypass her interlock. Officers located the female still stuck in the lot. She explained the odor of an alcoholic beverage in the vehicle by saying that she had just applied perfume. She was field tested and arrested for OVI and driving under a suspension from a previous OVI.
Busted
On 8/8/18 at about 7:15PM, an officer stopped a vehicle on I90 at the Lorain County line for an equipment violation. Neither the operator nor the passenger had a valid license. The passenger also had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. Officers observed signs of drug use in the car and upon checking, located suspected crack cocaine and paraphernalia. Both parties were arrested and charged with felony possession of crack cocaine. The driver was a 47yo male while the passenger was a 36yo female. Both resided in Elyria.
