Saturday, May 2 (All Day) Celebrate Comic Books Day – Join us to celebrate comic books and graphic novels! We will be giving out free comic books in the lobby while supplies last. Visitors can also enjoy activities, prize drawings and taking selfies with the comic book figures on display in the lobby.

Saturday, May 2 (10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.) Medicare: Ins and Outs – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? OSHIIP (the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) volunteer counselor Jim Langan will discuss your Medicare coverage options. Please register.

Saturdays, May 2, 9, 16 and 30 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! Ages 2-6 with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, May 2 (10:30 a.m.-noon) and Tuesday, May 5 (6-7:30 p.m.) Makerspace Foundations: CNC Orientation – Attend an orientation to learn the basics of using the CNC router and become a verified user of the machine. Registration begins one week before each session.

Sunday, May 3 (2-3 p.m.) Chess Club – Drop in and hone your skills or learn how to play chess in this casual, non-competitive club. Some sets provided, but feel free to bring your own. No registration required. Grades 1-4.

Sunday, May 3 (2-3 p.m.) Come Play With Me – An open playtime for children. No registration required. Ages 2-6 with a caregiver, siblings welcome!

Monday, May 4 (All Day) May Craft Kit Pick Up – Celebrate May with some fun crafts. Space is limited. Registration required, beginning April 27. Crafts recommended for ages 3-7.

Monday, May 4 (10:30-11 a.m.) Little Yogis – Stretch, breathe, and move through fun poses that build balance, focus, and joy in this yoga session for children up to age 5 with a caregiver. Please bring a yoga mat or towel. Ages 0-5. Presented by certified yoga instructor Jen Nebraska. Registration begins April 27.

Tuesday, May 5 (7–8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum: The Blitzkrieg Myth and the Fall of France – The German attack into France isn’t completely a tale of lightning-fast tank movements. Steve Pettyjohn explains how the Wehrmacht relied on horses and marching infantry for much of their movement. Please register.

Wednesday, May 6 (6-6:30 p.m.) Meet Your Makerspace! – What is the Makerspace? What can you make?  Come and learn all about the equipment available and what is required to use it! Registration begins April 29.

Wednesday, May 6 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Please register.

Thursday, May 7 and Monday, May 18 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile – Please give blood with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Thursday, May 7 (3-4 p.m.) Tech Bytes: iPhone and iPad Help Session – Have quick questions about your iPhone or iPad? Need help with basic features or apps? Join our Help Session for a casual drop-in opportunity to learn and share tips.

Thursday, May 7 (7-8 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Marjan Kamali, “The Lion Women of Tehran” – Join us for an exciting conversation with the internationally acclaimed author as we delve into the timeless wonder of her New York Times bestselling novel. Please register.

Saturday, May 9 (11 a.m.-12 p.m.) Laser Cut Miniature Bookshelves – Create your very own tiny bookshelf, then fill the shelves with miniature versions of books by notable Ohio authors! Registrants will receive a demonstration on how to use the Makerspace’s laser engraver and Lightburn software to cut wooden shelves before assembling their own bookshelves. Registration begins May 2.

Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 17 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration is required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Saturday, May 9 (2-4 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Beaded Lanyard for Keys or Glasses – Design & create a lanyard to hang your keys or glasses using beads & findings. All materials provided. Registration begins May 2. This program is for adults and teens.

Saturday, May 9 (4-5 p.m.) Italian Art Song Concert: An Afternoon with Soprano Minkyeong Kim – Join us for a delightful afternoon of Italian art songs, featuring a program of beloved and popular songs, perfect for both classical music lovers and first-time listeners. Minkyeong Kim completed her Professional Studies Diploma at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) where she received the Joseph B. McClelland Scholarship for Voice. Please register.

Monday, May 11 (4:30-5:15 p.m.) Tinkering with Tinkercad – Explore 3D design with Tinkercad! Learn the basics, start a project, and return to the Makerspace later to finish. No printing during the session. Grades 3-6. Registration begins May 4.

Monday, May 11 (6-8:30 p.m.) Heartsaver CPR/AED – Get certified for adult, child, and infant CPR and AED. Email account required. Class led by certified instructors from University Hospitals. This course provided by University Hospitals. Class size is limited. Registration is now open.

Monday, May 11 (7-8 p.m.) Earth “kind” Meetup Group – Meet with other veg/plant-based- curious individuals to discover new flavors, new foods and more ways to be kind to yourselves and to our earth. This group will meet most months on the second Monday of the month. Various topics will be discussed. No registration required.

Tuesday, May 12 (10-11 a.m.) The Classic Radio Hour: Information Please (1938) – Did you listen to these classic radio programs when they aired? Or are you new to the medium? Tune in for a trip down memory lane and join us for our Classic Radio Hour! Registration is now open.

Tuesday, May 12 (2-3 p.m.) Virtual Author Talk: Vivienne Ming, “Robot Proof” – Join us for a timely conversation on AI, humanity, and the next steps towards building a better future with self-proclaimed “mad scientist” Dr. Vivienne Ming as we discuss her new book, Robot-Proof: When Machines Have All the Answers, Build Better People.” Streamed live. Tuesday May 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss “The Life Impossible” by Matt Haig. Wednesday, May 13 (4-5 p.m.) After School in the ‘Space – Tweens and teens are welcome in the Makerspace to make a book-shaped box with the Laser Engraver! Participants must have a signed user agreement from a parent or guardian on file. For ages 11-15. Registration begins May 6.

Wednesday, May 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Environmentalism Book Club – This month’s title is “Total Garbage” by Edward Humes. Please register.

Thursday, May 14 (10-11:30 a.m.) Building Relationships with Funders – Go beyond grant writing to understand the basics of successful fundraising from foundations. Presented by David Holmes of Candid. Please register.

Thursday, May 14 (7-8:15 p.m.) Thursday Night Book Discussion – This month’s title is “West with Giraffes” by Lynda Rutledge. A limited number of copies will be available at the Circulation Desk. No registration required.

Saturday, May 16 (2-2:30 p.m.) Read It, Make It @ the Library – We will read one story then make a craft based on the story. No registration required. Ages 4-7 with a caregiver, siblings welcome.

Monday, May 18 (10-10:45 a.m.) STEAM Ahead: Float & Sink – Learn about the science of buoyancy and race the boats we create. Ages 4-6, up to kindergarten. Registration begins April 27.

Monday, May 18 (1-2 p.m.) True Crime Book Club – This month’s title is “The Forever Witness,” by Edward Humes. Please register.

Monday, May 18 (1-3 p.m.) Embroidered Affirmations – It’s Mental Health Awareness month, so here in the Makerspace we are affirming the embroidery machine. Learn the basics with our sewing machines all while exercising some micro-mindfulness. Registration begins May 11.

Monday, May 18 (7-8 p.m.) Retirement Income Planning – Will You Have Enough Income at Retirement? – While there’s no such thing as a “One size fits all” plan, there are steps you can take to maximize the possibility of a financially secure retirement. Tuesday, May 19 (7-8 p.m.) Get the Most Out of AI: How to Write the Best Prompt for the Answer You Need – Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a powerful and useful tool for many of us. It can also be quite overwhelming and a little confusing. Librarian Chad Statler and Middle School STEM teacher Amy Statler will talk about different tips and tricks to help you write the best prompts for AI chatbots and how you can put AI to work for you. Wednesday, May 20 (2-3 p.m.) Navigating Interfaces: The Universal Language – Learn the meanings behind icons like the gear and magnifying glass in this interactive program. We’ll explore real-world examples to help you build confidence navigating unfamiliar websites and apps. Registration opens May 13.

Wednesday, May 20 (2-3 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The Wednesday Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month. This month’s title is “My Friends” by Frederik Backman. No registration required.

Wednesday, May 20 (7-8 p.m.) A More Perfect Union: A Celebration of the Founding of America – To commemorate our nation’s 250th, the Largely Literary Theater Company offers a tribute to the writing and the writers who inspired the cause of American independence. Please register.

Thursday, May 21 (5-6 p.m.) How to Stay Active and Reduce Pain: Protect Your Body for the Long Term – For active individuals who want to move better, feel stronger, and protect their bodies for the years ahead. Learn strategies to reduce hip, back, and knee pain while enjoying the hobbies you love. Presented by Dr. Kyle MacMillan, PT, DPT, owner of Bridge Rehab and Performance in Westlake. Saturday, May 23 (10-11 a.m.) Breakout: Roblox Adventure – You are zapped into a digital world! Work together, solve the clues, and escape the game. Registration begins May 16. Grades 3-6.

Saturday, May 23 (2-4 p.m.) Make It, Take It! – Stop by Youth Services to complete a featured craft. While supplies last. No registration required. Not available for pickup at the drive-up window. No registration necessary. PreK-grade 2.

Tuesday, May 26 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) The Miracle of Earth: An Evening with the Great Lakes Astrophotography Society – Join the Great Lakes Astrophotography Society as they use advanced telescopes and real astronomical imagery to explore the remarkable chain of cosmic events that made Earth—and life itself—possible. Attendees will have the opportunity to operate an astrophotography rig during the program. Registration begins April 26.

Wednesday, May 27 (7–8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group: Spring is Here! – Join us for an hour of writing prompts to inspire you to keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! For adults and teens age 16 and up. Registration begins April 29.

Saturday, May 30 (1-2 p.m.) Pokémon Fun! – View and trade cards, do a craft, battle your librarian, or play a Pokémon Bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards! No registration required. Ages 6-11.
