Redwood School Names Avon Lake Eaglets
The Redwood Elementary School students in Avon Lake have spoken…..
The votes have been counted and they can now officially announce the names of the Eaglets in the nest at Redwood Elementary School in Avon Lake.
Welcome ‘Anchor’ and ‘Arrow’!!
The Eagle watches on the Avon Lake Bald Eagles Nest Facebook page captured the image here of the happy family. Stars (female) in back right. Stripes (male) in front. #1 Anchor (next to Stars). #2 Arrow (next to Stripes).
It is not known yet which eaglet is male or female. Right now, the only slight difference in the two Eaglets that the eagle watchers can spot is that #1 has a very dark top of its head. #2 has just a few white baby feathers still on the top of its head.
They are only a day apart in age. The Eaglets are now 7 weeks old.
They will soon be learning to fly!

Poppies for the Veterans
This year Avon Lake High School (ALHS) is working together with Lorain County Veterans to assist them in the “Reading of the Names” at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Lorain County, 911 N Lake St., Amherst, at 6 p.m. May 27. The Memorial exists to remember and honor the 98 soldiers from Lorain County who died in the service of their country in the Vietnam War. ALHS ceramics and advanced ceramics art students have created 98 personalized ceramic poppy flowers to be displayed at the Memorial over Memorial Day weekend.
Additionally, students researched each of the 98 soldiers from Lorain County that were killed in the Vietnam War. It was important that each poppy was unique and personal for the soldier and their families.
Avon Lake High School Senior Field Day
The annual Avon Lake High School Senior Field to celebrate the Class of 2023 held on May 19 at Avon Lake Memorial Stadium.

The last day of school for seniors is May 25 and Commencement is June 2.

Avon Lake Students are Stop the Hate Contest Winners
The Stop the Hate® contest is an initiative of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Beachwood that celebrates Northeast Ohio students committed to creating a more accepting, inclusive society by standing up and speaking out against bias and bigotry as they compete for the chance to win a prestigious award.
According to information from the Maltz Museum, each year approximately 3,000 students enter, and with the help of 300 volunteer readers, 20 finalists are named. Since the contest started 15 years ago, over 50,000 students in 12 counties across Northeast Ohio have participated, and as of this year, $1.5 million has been awarded.
Avon Lake High School is pleased to announce senior Misa Huls was named First Runner-Up. She received a $10,000 scholarship, as well as a $2,000 Anti-Bias Education Grant for the school.
Huls moved to Avon Lake from New Jersey when she was a sophomore and initially attended classes online during the pandemic. Her essay focused on some of her personal experiences in school and how she was able to turn those experiences into making positive changes. She was given the opportunity to help pilot the peer leadership program at Avon Lake High School thanks to the encouragement of her Avon Lake High School guidance counselor, Erin Grieger.
Huls will be attending The Ohio State University (major undecided). She is also the recipient of a Morrill Scholarship, Ohio State’s premier diversity/merit scholarship program, rewarding academically talented students who are actively engaged in diversity-based leadership, service, and social justice activities. She is also a Mount Leadership Scholar for Ohio State.
Learwood Middle School seventh-grader Olivia Piazza, earned first-place honors in the grades 6-10 category. She received a $400 cash prize. Her essay also focused on her personal experiences and how it’s important to stand up for yourself and others.
Super Fun Color Run
Erieview Elementary in Avon Lake held their Super Fun Color Run last week.
“How FUN was yesterday?! Silly string, confetti, water guns, a rainbow of colors and some fun active stations all came together with the help of many people. THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers, to those who donated, Randall’s Team Shop for providing all the t-shirts, DJ Chris, the Avon Lake High School Band, the teachers, and our fundraising committee led by Dana Kuhn.
The Super Fun Color Run raised around $4,500 to use for our school! Thank you again for volunteering as this event gets better every year with your help.
