Area Football Teams Cap Off Stellar Year

Avon Gridders Go to 12-0

Avon Football 1st Team SWC

Two weeks after capturing their 8th straight Southwestern Conference title, the Avon Eagles stayed on pace for another regional title as they topped Brecksville-Broadview Hts., 49-7 in a regional quarterfinal game at Avon’s Wahlberg Stadium last Friday night.

They go on to regional semifinal play against Olmsted Falls this Friday at Ranger Stadium in North Ridgeville. Avon topped Falls, 52-10, in September.

Jakorian Caffey, Avon’s all-time leading rusher and University of Cincinnati committee, rushed for 174 yards and 5 TDs against Brecksville.

Westlake Demons Go 7-4

The Westlake High football team enjoyed one of its best season’s recent years, posting a 7-4 overall record and 3-2 mark in the Great Lake Conference – good for third place. With junior quarterback Sam Bruccheri coming back next season, this playoff caliber team has a bright future!

Bay Gridders Go 8-3

The Bay High football team posted another fine season in 2023, finished 8-3 overall and making the OHSAA playoffs. The Rockets also finished 4-1 in the Great Lake Conference West behind Rocky River. Bay’s signature win came in a 44-28 decision over Westlake to capture the Little Brown Jug. Bay lost a 28-21 heartbreaker to Rocky River in GLC title matchup heartbreaker.

Rocky River Takes GLC Title

It was a great year for the Rocky River High football team as the Pirates posted a 10-2 overall record and 5-0 mark in the Great Lakes Conference to capture the West Division title. Signature win was a 28-21 victory over arch-rival Bay for the Helm Trophy and lead in the conference standings.
