Westlake’s Meadowood Golf Course Eyes Improvements

Driving range bays and practice putting greens will be part of the new Meadowood.

Golfers, rejoice! The City of Avon is getting a Top Golf facility on Chester Road. And Westlake, long time home to Meadowood Golf Course, is planning changes that include a top-shelf driving range and changes to the course itself.

Meadowood was a private course, established in 1985 or earlier, and later acquired by the city. The course became Meadowood when the city took it over. Before that it was Hedgewood.

The City of Westlake continued to run Meadowood as a public golf course. It was successful until the recession in 2008 and revenues were declining.

“In 2015, a master plan was completed and a golf course was rated as being one the most highly desired amenities by the residents,” reports City of Westlake Director of Recreation Paula Horner. So, in 2018 the city contracted an architect and Jimmy Hanlin to develop plans. Hanlin is a highly regarded PGA golf pro and also has his own show on FOX Sports, “18 Holes with Jimmy Hanlin.”

“A decision could not be made on whether to build a 9 hole course or an 18 hole course along with a state of the art practice facility, so it was decided to move forward with the driving range as phase one,” said Horner. “And then a decision will need to be made about redeveloping the golf course as phase 2.

“We plan to perform a survey of our residents and patrons to make sure we are getting their input.”

The coming driving range will include:

  • 18 heated indoor bays plus a training bay.
  • There will also be outdoor grass tees. “We plan to use technology so that golfers can work to improve their swing and it will also add some additional entertainment value for families,” said Horner.

The funds will come from the general fund and it will be an enterprise fund. An enterprise fund is a fund that tracks the operations of a service that is similar to a private business.

“We will be responsible for generating revenue to offset the costs and to pay back the capital cost over time,” said Horner. “This will be a great new amenity for the residents of Westlake.

“We are excited to have the support of Mayor Clough and the City Council to move forward on the design work.”

The project will need to go back to City Council for approval to go out to bid and then to accept the bid.
