The 2017 campaign was one of the best-ever in Avon High School history.
The Eagles flew high this season, going undefeated through the regular season and capturing an undisputed Southwestern Conference championship. They posted a 10-0 regular season record.
Then it was off to the OHSAA Div. 2 Playoffs where Avon won just the second Regional championship in school history and advanced to the state’s final four.
When it was over, Avon closed the books on an amazing 13-1 season – best ever in Eagle annals.
For Coach Mike Elder, it was special indeed!
- Coach Mike Elder, who lost his dad the week of the Regional finals, is presented the champion-ship trophy by Kyle Kudla (40) and Alex Waters after the game. “I knew you guys had my back all week,” said Coach Elder after the victory.
- Quarterback Ryan Maloy leads the celebration as Avon captured a Regional Championship this season with a playoff win over Olmsted Falls.
“These seniors and the 2017 TEAM have left a legacy!” says Coach Elder. “Their work ethic and love of their teammates was Elite. Nothing is given and everything is earned in our program. Playing for the town in which you live is special.”
In a season of triumph, Avon players also achieved individual recognition. Earning All-Ohio honors were wide receiver Chris Mullins, quarterback Ryan Maloy, lineman Jimmy McKenna, defensive lineman Max Torbert, linebacker Kyle Kudla and punter David Orlando.
“Thank you to the players and coaches for another awesome ride!! Our district and our community are proud of you!!,” said Supt. of Schools Mike Laub.
“Love this team. It is and always will be a great day to be an Eagle,” said senior Max Torbert.
“Best 14 weeks of my life,” added David Orlando as he closes the book on a life chapter that will only grow in meaning through time.

- Tony Eberhardt picks up big yardage in Avon’s win over St. John Jesuit in the first round of the playoffs.
- Mark Steinmetz (39) and the Avon defense slam the door on St. John Jesuit.
- Sophomore running back Nick Perusek high steps his way into the end zone as Avon topped Olmsted Falls for a playoff win and regional title.
- Avon seniors Matt Kennedy (18), David Orlando (9) and Chris Mullins share an embrace as the Eagles season came to an end with a 13-1 record.
- Danny Burdock (67) and Jakob Slunksi (62) can close the books on a truly great 2017 season that saw Avon lose only to eventual state champ Akron Hoban.
