Twenty-two young poets from Hilliard Elementary School were selected to have their work published in a hardcover anthology from Poetic Power, a quarterly poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications. And the school earned a Poetic Achievement Award for its efforts.
In December, gifted intervention specialist Erin Vanek’s fourth-grade students wrote an original poem for submission to the contest. Twenty-two were selected for publication. That earned the school a Poetic Achievement Award for having a large number of entries and more than 50 percent accepted for publication. Only a small percentage of schools are honored with this award, which recognizes excellence in Language Arts.
Works are judged by published writers and/or educators in elementary, secondary and higher education. Poems are judged on literary merit, creativity and social significance.
