Westlake Porter Public Library’s Late September Calendar of Events

Saturday, September 18 (2-3 p.m.) Dungeons & Dragons 101 (Live) – Interested in Dungeons & Dragons but don’t know where to start? Join us via Zoom as we start to explore the world of D&D together. For those in grades 4-6. In this first session we will be going over the basics of character creation. Please register. Zoom instructions will be emailed the day of the program.

Saturday, September 18 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Going Bananas: Comics, Folklore, and More with the Scholarly Banana! – Join local author Karly West as she shares her creative process for crafting her hilarious and unique comic series, The Scholarly Banana. In the series Karly uses handmade polymer clay figures to breathe new life into creepy classic fairy tales. She’ll explain her creative process, from rewriting classic tales to crafting the delicate clay figures she uses. Copies of Karly’s books will be available for purchase after the program. This program is open to teens and adults. A take-home craft kit will also be available to the teen participants upon request. Please register.

Saturday, September 18 (9-11 p.m.) Movies Under the Stars – While home sick in bed, a young boy’s grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies & allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love (PG). We will be outside, socially-distanced in our field enjoying an evening under the stars. Movies will begin at dusk so feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets for chilly evenings. Building restrooms will be accessible. Please register every person that will be attending including children and adults. At this time, caregivers must stay with their child(ren) during programming. Sunday, September 19 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Mystery Event – Join together to solve several American Girl Mysteries and also play games and make a theme-related craft. Ages 6-10. This program is weather permitting. Staff will make every effort to notify you in a timely manner if we cannot meet in-person. A decision about weather will be made 24 hours in advance to allow time for you to pick up supplies. There is no supply pick up if we meet in person. Zoom invites will be sent to all registered attendees only if we will not be meeting in person. Please register.

Monday, September 20 (9 a.m.- 9 p.m.) Space Crafts Pick Up – 3…2…1…Blast off to the library for a bag of space-themed crafts! Kits will be available for pick up until Tuesday, September 28, unless other arrangements are made. Please register.

Monday, September 20 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) Tween Craft Kit Pick-Up – Stop by Youth Services starting at 9 a.m. for a tween craft kit! Grades 4-6. Please register.

Monday, September 20 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Crafty Adults Supply Pick-Up – Make a craft project of your own with this simple pick-up kit. For adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. No previous craft experience necessary. Glue, scissors and markers will not be included. All other materials are supplied. Please register.

Monday, September 20 (7-8:30 p.m.) Investors’ Interest Group (Live) – Join us on ZOOM for an Introduction to Annuities: Funding Your Future – Myths vs. Facts by Mr. Michael Zawatsky, President of the Lake Erie Chapter of the non-profit Society for Financial Awareness. You must register with your email address to receive the ZOOM instructions.

Tuesday, September 21 (7-8:30 p.m.) Information Hunters (Live) – Join Dr. Kathy Peiss (history, University of Pennsylvania) as she discusses her latest book, Information Hunters, which tells the incredible story of how librarians, soldiers, and spies worked together to gather information about life and developments inside Nazi Germany and occupied Europe. Please register. You will receive an email with Zoom information prior to the program.

Wednesday, September 22 (4-5 p.m.)  Fall Teen Writers Workshop (Live) – A twice a month meet up for writers in grades 7-12. In this workshop, we’ll be prepping for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in November. Hit the ground running in November by getting organized and brainstorming within a supportive group of young writers. We’ll also share tips and tricks to maintaining a productive writing environment. Please register. Participants must provide an email address to receive Zoom instructions, which will be sent the day of the program.

Wednesday, September 22 (7-8 p.m.) Adult Creative Writing Group – Join us in person for an hour of creative writing prompts to inspire you to start and keep writing. Creativity is more than putting pen to paper. It’s about breaking away and trying something new! Please register. Please provide an email address when registering.

Thursday, September 23 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Roblox Arcade (Live) – Love Roblox? Then join us in the Roblox Arcade! We have some private servers set up for Tweens in grades 4-6 to hang out with their friends and enjoy some of the most popular games via Zoom. Registration begins September 2.

Friday, September 24 (4-4:45 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Dinosaur Discovery – Let’s explore the word of dinosaurs, from fossils and eggs to carnivores and herbivores. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take-home project. Ages 4-6, through kindergarten. At this time, caregivers must stay with their child(ren) during programming. Registration begins September 17. Please register every person attending, including children and adults.

Saturday, September 25 (11-11:30 a.m.) Adapted Storytime (Live) – Join us for this ZOOM storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7 years. Pick up a kit for a hands-on experience! Registration begins September 18. Participants must provide an email address to receive Zoom instructions, which will be sent the day of the program.

Tuesday, September 28 (6:30-10 p.m.) Indoor Movie Night – Enjoy a presentation of the award-winning film about a team of female African-American mathemeticians who served a vital role in the early years of NASA’s space program. Please register every person that will be attending.

Wednesday, September 29 (7-8:30 p.m.) Comics and the Clinic: History of the Comic Book and Mental Health (Live) – Join us on Zoom as Valentino Zullo discusses the portrayal of mental health in comics, and how this medium offers unique insight into the minds of its characters. Mental health practitioners have long been invested in comics: from psychologist William Moulton Marston’s creation of Wonder Woman to psychiatrist Fredric Wertham’s infamous attack on comics as a corrupter of youth, to the current burgeoning of comics that chronicle stories of mental health treatments. Zullo is a PhD candidate at Kent State University and licensed social worker practicing as a Maternal Depression Therapist at OhioGuidestone. He is the American Editor of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics. Zullo’s writings have been featured in numerous publications, including the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society. Please register.

Wednesday, September 29 (8-9 p.m.) Discovery Box Sign-Up – Teens in grades 7-12: You’ll receive a survey to fill out, and we’ll use your responses to create a custom Discovery Box! Pick-up begins October 6 (8-9 p.m.).
