Westlake Students Raise Money for Cleft Palate Patients

The Westlake Dover Intermediate School’s 6th grade STARS team  recently decided they wanted to take action after reading in Mrs. Beachler’s English Language Arts class about kids born into poverty with cleft palates. By making bookmarks, they raised over $1,000 for Operation Smile and paid for 5 children’s surgeries!

Westlake Science Olympiad Teams Advance to State

Westlake Schools Science Olympiad teams have advanced to the state tournament which will be held on April 29 at The Ohio State University. This is after they earned first place in both Division B and Division C at the March 4 regional tournament at Baldwin Wallace.

There are 95 students on the team. Division B is grades 6-9 and that is 57 participants. Division C is grades 10-12 that has 38 participants.

This year, they’ve competed in 14 tournaments on 5 college campuses in three states. Some of the sections for competition include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space Science, Technology & Engineering, and Inquiry & Nature of Science.

Coach Laura Lathem has been leading the team since 2007.

Top Physics Student Honored

Congratulations to Westlake High School senior Yehyun Choi for qualifying to take the USA Physics Olympiad exam. Only the top 400 physics students in the country qualify for this honor and the chance to compete for the U.S. Physics Team in international competition.
