All Ducked Out for the 2011 Duck Tape Festival!


The 8th annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival over Father’s Day weekend showed the annual summer celebration at Veteran’s Memorial Park has real “Sticking Power!” Even Miss America, Teresa Scanlon, took part in this year’s fest that featured the theme, “Real Fans Stick Togther.” It’s estimated that about 40,000 visitors stopped by this year’s version of the fun fair. The highlight is Shurely the Saturday morning Duct Tape parade from Avon High to the fair grounds. Spectators get there early and are not disappointed in the colorful creations made of duct tape that matriculated down Detroit Road. Scanlon, who is Miss America 2011, as delighted to be part of this year’s festival. She met with fans after the parade and reported a long-time fascination with Duct Tape as a quirky art form that spells fun. She reported her own experiences designing duct-tape clothes and crafts, and even wore a pair of duct tape shoes!
“I started mingling with public school kids and told them all about how much I loved duct tape,” she said of her high school days in Nebraska.“It taught me it’s OK to be different. The cool kids were all in sports. But I did what I loved and what I was good at and that gave me the confidence to continue in the performing arts.” Speaking of sports, it was sports theme – RealFans Stick Together – that brought lots of local participation in making floats.
