Top Chef! And the winner is…Michael Nowak of Bar Cento!

It was a three-point play that won the coveted grand prize for Chef Michael Nowak of Bar Cento at the classy Top Chef competition hosted by St. John Medical Center at the Q last Saturday night.
Chef Michael prepared coriander-crusted tuna for his appetizer and Ohio braised and roasted Ohio pork done three different ways for his entrée.
Celebrity host Ted Allen joined with Plain Dealer food critic Joe Crea and Chef Regan Reik, last year’s winner, in naming Nowak “Top Chef” for 2011!
Taking the stage to accept his award, Nowak proclaimed the victory a team win. He happily shared the spotlight with Chef d’Cuisine Adam Lambert and the rest of the talented crew that worked all day to prepare the winning fare. Braised shoulder, roasted loin and smoked tenderloin netted the Quicken Loans win for this talented crew from Cleveland’s award-winning Bar Cento.
“People’s Choice” winner was Chef Sarah Sherapia of Luxe in the Detroit Shoreway area. Her beautiful Argula salad appetizer and hand-rolled Gnocchi entrée was the double-digit choice of the audience.
Selling out the floor of Quicken Loans Arena, Top Chef 2011 guests enjoyed the giant Q Tube televised proceedings from their tables. Emmy award winning guest host and judge Ted Allen enjoyed the lively interviews and banter on the big screen provided by Ahmad Crump, the voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
This is the third year for Top Chef and it’s fundraiser for St. John Medical Center’s Women’s and Children’s Services. That includes the Breast Health Center, family and holistic birthing suites, pediatrics, and Community Outreach Department. Co-chaired by Patrick Garmone and Kathy Bacha, Garmone reports net proceeds are expected to near $75,000 for Women’s and Children’s Services as well as Community Outreach.
