Tuxedos, formals and fun. Yes, it is prom season.
St. Mary of the Woods hosted a truly “senior prom” as residents turned back the clock and danced the night away Sat., May 12.
Joined by members of the Avon High Key Club, the elegant senior living facility on Detroit Road in Avon had everything you would expect from a formal ball.
Photos under a balloon arch, great food and a DJ made for a truly memorable evening of spring fun.
“This was the first prom we have put on. We found out some of the residents never went to prom because of being in the army or never going to high school,” said St. Mary of the Woods Activities Director Robin Hanna. “Others said their prom was cancelled because of the depression. This was our way to make sure they had one in their life time.”
The event was supported in whole-hearted fashion by members of the Avon High School Key Club, headed by President Rachel Buckley. “The kids loved the idea and got right on the band wagon. They made crowns, boutonnieres and sashes for all the residents. They even made a balloon arch!”
The turnout among St. Mary residents was so great, two kings and two queens were crowned, sharing royal honors. John Lucic and Beverly Sylvester, and Craig Sutton and Marilyn Dietrich shared the royal appointments.
“We also had a red carpet to make the event special as well as pictures taken on the red carpet,” added Hanna. “One resident commented that the last prom she went to was in at Lorain High School in 1924.”
