CLEVELAND – Each year, “Give Kids a Smile Day” at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) provides nearly 60 local children with approximately $20,000 of free dentistry. This year’s event will be Saturday, April 6, from 9 2 p.m. at the Metropolitan Campus Dental Hygiene Clinic in the Health Careers and Sciences Building, 2900 Community College Ave., Cleveland.

College dental hygiene and dental assisting students, staff and community dental volunteers will provide free dental screenings to children who do not have dental insurance. The screenings will include an examination, one-on-one hygiene instruction, and X-rays and sealants, if needed.

Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases among school-age children – five times as common as asthma and seven times as common as hay fever in 5- to 17-year-olds. It is crucial that children fight tooth decay with daily brushing and flossing. One of the best ways to protect teeth from decay is with periodic dental exams and daily hygiene care.

Giving back to the community is one of the philosophies taught to students in the College’s dental hygiene and assisting programs under the leadership of Mary Lou Gerosky, who feels strongly about providing services to uninsured children. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, area professionals and community residents to show how Tri-C changes lives and to give the community much-needed dental care!” said Gerosky.

“Give Kids a Smile Day” is free and open to the public, but registration is required. All patients will receive a new toothbrush and goody bag. Parents and legal guardians are encouraged to bring children up to 17 years old and must be present during the sessions. To schedule an appointment, call 216-987-4411.

The Tri-C dental clinic provides affordable exams, X-rays, and cleanings throughout the school year – fees are $15 for adults, $10 for children. The clinic is an educational facility where dental hygiene students provide preventive care under the supervision of clinical faculty.

Give Kids a Smile is part of the National Children’s Dental Access Day educational campaign to help prevent tooth decay through early, ongoing prevention measures. Sponsors for the event include the American Dental Association and Ohio Dental Association.
