The Battle for the Little Brown Jug – the annual rivalry between the Westlake and Bay High football teams – was another terrific contest again this year.
Although Westlake won, 20-14, both teams rose to the occasion in a rivalry so old it dates back to the days when Dover High split up into different communities – the cities of Westlake and Bay Village.
The storied battle was once so anticipated that a local old-timer, John Gaeth, who has since passed away, drove his riding lawnmower to Westlake’s Lou Duchez Field to avoid a choice between traffic tie-ups and a long walk home. Talk about a parking pass! When Westlake Police spotted him, he was guided to a preferred spot near the stadium gate!
Westlake quarterback Kent Axcell led the way last Friday with touchdown passes to Paul Angala and Derrick Moore. Axcell ended the night 11-21 passing for over 120 yards. Bay’s QB, Jake Best, also played a great game. Another terrific battle for The Little Brown Jug is now in the books and both teams left the field with heads held high.
This weekend, Bay hosts Fairview while Westlake hosts Youngstown East.
