Celebrating National Postcard Week

By MARY LEVTZOW

OLMSTED FALLS – Many thanks to the Boy Scouts of Bay Village who made National Post Card Week celebrations a success!

National Postcard Week (NPCW) began as a way for sellers and collectors to promote the hobby of postcard collecting. The 31st annual National Postcard Week is being celebrated during the first full week of May, May 4-10, 2014. Many Ohioans and members of the Western Reserve Post Card Society (WRPCS) helped start this national celebration of a fun hobby in 1983.

On April 25 and April 26, hundreds of deltiologists deftly darted in from the cool weather and showers to view postcards from across America to enlarge their personal collections at the 41st annual Western Reserve Post Card Show at Lenau Park in Olmsted Falls. This highly and eagerly anticipated annual show is sponsored by the Western Reserve Post Card Society (WRPCS). This event is free to members with a $3 donation by non-members.

Some of the NPCW Pioneers were DeeDee Parker of the WRPCS, John McClintock, Roy Cox and Richard Novick. An excerpt from the IFPD Newsletter of March 1, 1983, written by John McClintock states, “For the past year we have been working on a Postcard Day, Week or Month to help promote the hobby/business. DeeDee Parker graciously accepted the task of correlating the thoughts of the postcard collectors/dealers in the matter. It seems the majority wishes to have a Postcard Week and that it be held the First full week of May. This will be a lot of fun and insure perpetuation of the hobby in the future.”

For hours of enjoyment one should investigate all the wonderful websites found by putting in National Postcard Week or simply attend the Western Reserve Post Card Society (WRPCS) meetings.

History abounds throughout the avocation of post card collecting.

Members constantly share outstanding and historical cards.

Attendees are thrilled to see their favorite dealers and the new dealers. This annual opportunity to add to one’s personal collection excites local deltiologists because the quality, variety, and uniqueness of the historic, classic, and nostalgic post cards take one back to simpler times and the joys of childhood as they capture the America of their parents and grandparents.

The Western Reserve Post Card Society’s monthly meetings are held in the upper level of Lenau Park, 7370 Columbia Road, in Olmsted Falls between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each third Saturday. There is no July meeting, and the August meeting is a picnic at a date to be announced.

Whatever part of history one focuses on is definitely captured on post cards. One can come to sell, buy or trade post cards on Saturday, May 17, with the WRPCS members in the upper level of Lenau Park at 7370 Columbia Road in Olmsted Falls from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This dynamic group from across northern Ohio share their love for Deltiology and all its unique facets.
