Tri-C Hosts 38th Annual Dr. King Celebration

TriC14-4612 MLK E-PostcardRemembrance is longest-running MLK event in Cleveland

Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) will host its 38th annual birthday observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, in the Metropolitan Campus Auditorium, 2900 Community College Ave.

The free event features performances by Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee Richard Smallwood and the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as scholarship presentations and speeches honoring Dr. King.

The Tri-C celebration is the longest-running MLK event hosted in Cleveland. The tradition began in 1977, six years before the federal government designated a day to honor the slain civil rights leader.

More than 1,000 people typically attend Tri-C’s observance.

“For nearly four decades, the College has brought the community together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King,” Tri-C President Alex Johnson said. “His dream of freedom and equality lives in all of us and continues to inspire hope for a better world.”

The remembrance will include the presentation of the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund recipients. Fourteen Tri-C students — all graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District — earned scholarships for their academic excellence and community service.

Attendees also will hear Taylor Wynne and Tyler Wynne, siblings from South Euclid, deliver speeches honoring the sacrifice and lessons of King. Taylor will share the speech that earned her second place in last year’s Ohio MLK Oratorical Contest. Tyler, a four-time finalist in the state competition, will present a new speech written for this celebration. Taylor, 16, is a sophomore at Beaumont School. Tyler, 18, is a senior at Brush High School.

Wayne Dawson, co-anchor of Fox 8 News in the Morning, will serve as emcee of the event.
