Ed’s, Elyria Matmen Take Honors in State’s Toughest Sectional

DSC_0028-7The road to Columbus for high school wrestlers began last weekend with OHSAA sectional tournaments throughout the state.

Westlake High hosted a 12-team section last weekend, one that is being called the toughest sectional in the state.

Winner was St. Edward with 309 points, followed by Elyria, 281.5; 3, Olmsted Falls, 196, Avon,  124.5, and  Lorain 106.

St. Edward crowned six champions out of 11 wrestlers in the finals and qualified wrestlers in all 14 weight divisions to this weekend’s Cleveland State District Tournament.

Elyria set a school record with eight finalist and six champ, sending 12 wrestlers to the district meet. The 12 district qualifiers is program record for Elyria, smashing the old record of 10.

Winning individual championships for St. Edward were Alan Hart (113), L.J. Bentley (126), Hunter Ladnier (132), Isaac Collier (138), Jared Campbell (195) and Parker Knapp (220).

Titlists for Elyria included Josh Breeding (106), Nicholas Mayer (120), Brendan Price (145), JT Brown (170), Ben Darmstadt (182) and Kevin Vough (285).

Ed’s and Elyria combined for 12 of the 14 individual championships. The others went to Brice Locklear of Olmsted Falls at 152 pounds. His 5-4 decision over Mikah Price of Elyria was his 100th career win.

Travis Leopold (160) of Avon continued his winning ways with a 10-9 decision in the finals over D.J. Williamson on the finals. The win boosted Leopold’s record to 46-0 this season. The win in the finals was his 101st career victory. And Ben Darmstadt of Elyria wrestled less than three minutes total as he cruised through all his matches via pins at 182 pounds.
