Summertime and the Livin’ is…Busy!

Summer is here and the calendar is filled with things to do. From art fests to summer markets, from community concerts to the totally unique Avon Duck Tape Festival, there is just so much to do now that June’s blue skies have arrived. Here’s a look at some upcoming local highlights you won’t want to miss:

Destination, Bay – June 13

Bay Village has coordinated a number of community events for Sat., June 13, ‘Destination, Bay.’ The 46th annual “Cahoon in June” fine crafts, collectibles and antiques event is June 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Cahoon Memorial Park. This year, the Bay Village Historical Society is partnering with BAYarts, which holds its Annual Art and Music Festival on the same day in nearby Huntington Park.

AntiqueShow01_500-1The Village Project has also scheduled its “Project Pedal” fundraiser for June 13. The Lake Erie Nature and Science Center will have planetarium programs that day and the Bay Village Fire Department plans an open house. Huntington Playhouse will be open for tours and refreshments and the Village Bicycle Cooperative will offer guidance in bike mechanics and learning about crafty upcycling projects. Transportation will run between venues all day.

A Civil War reenactment and a display of antique cars will be highlights of Cahoon in June. The reenactment will serve as a time machine to transport visitors back to the Civil War era. Military equipment and personal items that belonged to soldiers in the Civil War will be on display. Join in a campfire discussion with members of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry to learn about one of the most important periods in American history.

Admission to Cahoon in June is free again this year. The School of Rock will perform in the gazebo from noon to 2 p.m., followed by Madison Crawl from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Culinary artisans from the Cleveland Culinary Launch Kitchen will have a presence at the show, selling their Northeast Ohio-made products. Food concessions will include the Ironwood Café, The Sweet Spot food truck, Island Delights and Veg’n Out Cafe vegan bakery.

Proceeds from this event support the Rose Hill Museum, the Reuben Osborn Learning Center and student scholarships. The museums will be open during Cahoon in June. Contact Cynthia Eakin at 216-213-0312 for additional information.

Crocker Park Art Fair & Craft Marketplace – June 13 & 14

CPArtFairCrocker Park in Westlake will be transformed into an outdoor art gallery on June 13 & 14, featuring the finest artists and crafters in country. A wide variety of original fine art and affordable crafts, as well as unique gift items, will be on display and for sale with prices set to suit all budgets. Enjoy the eclectic art, live music and register to win the free art giveaway. Hours are: Sat., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.  Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival – June 19-21

DuckTapeFestivalThis year’s Annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival is June 19-21. It always takes place on Father’s Day weekend. Don’t miss the Saturday morning Duck Tape Parade featuring floats made of the colorful line of tape, or the world-famous fashion show on Saturday afternoon. It is wild, weird and mostly just plain fun for the whole family. Joy Unspeakable, the living statue, will be there again this years. Plus a Ducktivities arts and crafts tent, and food, rides, games, and live entertainment. This years theme is “Duck Tape takes You on a Tropical Vacation.” The 12th annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival will kick off on June 19, just in time to celebrate Father’s Day. The festival will be an all-weekend event starting Fri. at 4 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Avon. This three-day event celebrates duck tape, it’s enthusiasts and it’s wacky and fun uses. The festival also honors the history and heritage of the city that is proclaimed the “Duck Tape Capital” of the world—Avon, Ohio—the home of Duck brand duct tape.

Clifton Arts & MusicFest – June 20

CliftonsArtMusicFestThe 28th Annual Clifton Arts & Musicfest is set for Sat., June 20. Cudell Improvement, Inc. has once again invited all artists to display and sell works at the Annual Clifton Arts & Musicfest. Cudell Improvement, Inc. founded the Clifton Arts & Musicfest and proudly presents it annually on Clifton Boulevard in the lakefront Cudell/Edgewater neighborhood on the northwest side of Cleveland. The Clifton Arts and Musicfest was established as a unique celebration combining fine arts and live musical performances – a true street festival located in a very attractive and vibrant urban neighborhood setting. As a juried art competition, only the finest artisans from Ohio and around the United States are admitted to the show. Prize money is awarded annually in the Juried Art Show. This annually anticipated event, that draws about 40,000 patrons, places special emphasis on the pride, vitality and diversity of this community in Cleveland and northeast Ohio.

Westlake in Bloom Competition – June 26

Celebrate the beautiful gardens in Westlake by entering the Westlake in Bloom Competition. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m., Fri., June 26. Entry form at www.cityofwestlake.org. Call for info 440-617-4312. Judging will be July 6, 7 and 8. Awards presented Wed., Aug. 12 at LaCentre Conference Center.

American Liberty Fest 2015 – June 28

Bay Days 2015 Independence Day Celebration – July 1-4

BayDaysHighlights include live music, Classic Car Cruise-In, bike parade and fireworks.

Bay Village’s 63rd annual Independence Day celebration, Bay Days, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Bay Village, will take place Wed., July 1 through Sat., July 4 – all at Cahoon Park.

Booths and rides will be open from Noon to 10:30 p.m. daily. From Noon to 4 p.m. each day, thrill-seekers can enjoy all the rides for the flat rate of $18 with a ride wristband.

“The Kiwanis Club of Bay Village, along with the City of Bay Village, has once again lined up a spectacular Independence Day celebration for young and old alike at this year’s Bay Days celebration,” says Rhonda Schneider of the Kiwanis Club. “Come on out and enjoy the rides, help local civic organizations raise money at their booths, and of course, take your entire family to the incredible fireworks presentation on Sat., July 4.”

New this year, the Kiwanis partner with the Bay Village Green Team to work toward reducing waste at Bay Days.

The schedule of Kiwanis Club-sponsored events kicks off on Wed., July 1, at 5 p.m. with the annual favorite, the Classic Car Cruise-In with DJ Cadillac Mike, followed by live music at 7 p.m. at the Gazebo with the Bay Village Community Band. A new addition to the car show this year is the showcasing of energy-efficient cars from local car dealerships.

On Thurs., July 2, there will be live music at the Gazebo at 7 p.m. with Gatlin (Darryl and Andrea Gatlin), performing country music and comedic banter. Visit www.gatlinshow.com to read more about these award-winning recording artists.

On Fri., July 3 the Sloppy Joe Band performs at 7 p.m. at the Gazebo with classic rock, blues and R&B hits from the 60s through 80s.

On Sat., July 4, festivities kick off with the Bay Days 5-mile Race and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run at the Gazebo, stepping off at 8:30 a.m. (Visit www.clewestrunningclub.org for more information or to register.) Then at 11:30 a.m. is the annual Bike, Trike and Wagon Parade at the Gazebo. At Noon there will be a Magic Show in the Community House, and at 2 p.m. a Vintage Baseball Game at the South End of Cahoon Park as the Bay Men’s Club Villagers take on the Whiskey Island Shamrocks. There’s more live music at the Gazebo at 6 p.m. with Random Outcome. And then the perfect finale to any Bay Village Independence Day celebration, the Gala Fireworks Display at Cahoon Park at dusk, about 9:45 p.m. (Rain date for the fireworks is Monday, July 6.)

Avon Lake Fourth of July Celebration – July 4

Avon Lake will hold it’s celebration on Thurs., July 2 (rain date July 5) at Weiss Field, 33401 Webber Rd in Avon Lake. Performing at 7 p.m. will be Redneck Agenda; 8:30 p.m. performance by anne E. DeChant; Fireworks to follow.

St. John Medical Center Festival of the Arts – July 10-12

SJMCFestivalArtsThe St. John Medical Center Festival of the Arts is the premier fine art and boutique crafts show in the Cleveland area. Now in its 22nd year, the Festival will feature more than 200 of America’s finest artists and craft persons who will be showcased on the beautiful park-like grounds of the St. John Medical Center campus located 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland July 10-12. The attendance for 2014’s Festival exceeded 15,000 people, with activities for young and old alike. This 3-day gala event will feature live musical entertainment, a variety of food trucks, and hands-on children’s craft activities. New this year – Boutique Crafts Area for the “fun” and “funky” artist. Free Health Care Screenings on the grounds. The Festival is open to the public, free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items for local hunger centers. In 2014, over 2,500 pounds of food was collected to help those in need. This is the most exciting art extravaganza on the North Coast!
