The Avon Police Department received a report from a resident on Sandy Lane advising that she heard four “pops” which she believed to be gunshots.
The caller stated she observed something across the street fall down the front steps of the residence which may have been a person. Officers responded to the area and did observe a male lying on the front steps of the home at 3341 Sandy Lane.
Two officers approached the front of the residence to check on the male and render aid if needed. When the officers made it to the downed male, the male appeared to be deceased.
As officers were in front of the residence they heard a shot coming from inside the home. An officer believing he was under fire, fired one round from his service weapon into the home as officers retreated to a safe distance behind cover.
A female then appeared at the front door of the residence and was ordered out of the house. It was learned that she was the resident of the home and appeared to have been physically assaulted. She advised officers that her estranged boyfriend and father of her 20 month old child had come to the residence. He had assaulted her and held her against her will. She advised the officers that he had shot the man who was lying on the front steps and then turned the gun on himself. She told officers that the man on the front step was an acquaintance that had stopped by the residence. She also advised that her 20 month old son was still in the residence in a crib.
Not knowing for certain if the male had indeed shot himself, Officers established a perimeter with the assistance of the North Ridgeville and Avon Lake Police Departments and made attempts to contact the man inside the home by telephone and public address system. After getting no response entry was made into the home by the Lorain County SWAT Team. The SWAT Team recovered the child whom was uninjured and also found the body of the other male whom appeared to have died from a self inflicted gunshot wound.
