Current Troy Intermediate School fifth-grader, Katherine Danielson, was recently presented with the 2015 Young Illustrator Award during a meeting of the Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education.

The Educational Service Center of Lorain County’s Gifted Supervisor, Cathy Fischer, presented the award.

Each year, the Gifted Department at the Educational Service Center of Lorain County, the Community Foundation and the National Association of College Stores, in conjunction with Lorain County Community College, sponsors the Young Authors’ Conference.

This program provides an opportunity for Lorain County public, parochial, and home-schooled students in grades 3-6 to write and illustrate original stories.  Students’ stories are assessed by a panel of judges, and showcased at the event.

During the Young Authors’ Conference, which is held each May, more than 900 students are inspired and entertained by nationally-renowned authors and story-tellers.  Award-winners for the ‘Best of Show’ Author and Illustrator categories are announced at the daytime conference, with an Open House held in the evening for families and friends to attend.

During the conference, winners were presented with trophies and certificates. Due to the conference dates falling near the end of the school year, the final components of the award are given to the students in the fall during school district’s board of education meetings. Danielson received a poster of her artwork and a hardcover book of her submitted story, “How Nature Got a Little Brighter.”
