Bay High Football Celebrates Record Year

The Bay High football team lodged a milestone year in 2015, setting a school-record for 10 wins in a season, winning a share of the Great Lakes Conference championship and advancing to the regional semifinals of the OHSAA Div. III playoffs.

Leading the way with honors was senior running back Nick Best. Best did it all for the Rockets this season. He leaves behind a litany of school records:

Most touchdowns in a single game – 7. Nick set the mark in a 55-13 win over Brookside. He carried the ball 27 times and gained 270 yards;

Most points scored in a single game – 42; Rushing attempts in a season – 329; Rushing yards in a season – 2178; Rushing touchdowns in a season – 33; Points scored in a season – 210 (35 touchdowns).

Best leads a list of five Rockets to gain all-GLC first team honors: Nick Best, Joe DeBarr, Maxton Edgerly, Cole Gergye and Kyle Thompson.

Bay also set school records for its potent offense in 2015 with 2,936 rushing yards gained, 389 points scored and 10 wins on the year. It is Bay’s first-ever 10 win football season. Bay went 10-1 and shared the GCL Conference championship with Rocky River and Elyria Catholic.

Best was also named Offensive Player of the Year by the AP to head the Northeast Ohio Lakes All-District football team in Div. II. He was joined on the first team by linebacker Joe DeBarr, lineman Maxton Edgerly, and receiver Cole Gergye.

For Rocky River, quarterback Eric Jones took second team honors. First-teamers were kicker Matt Goepfert and back Jack Corrigan.

Bay Village: 1st Team, GLC: Nick Best, Joe DeBarr, Maxton Edgerly, Cole Gergye and Kyle Thompson.

2nd Team, GLC: Sean Heideloff, Jimmy Hoke, Trey Psota, John Reid and Matt Tashjian.

Avon Leads Div. II Picks

Avon High’s football team fashioned another memorable year, ending the season at 10-1 overall and advancing to the regional semifinals of the OHSAA Div. II playoffs.

Taking AP Northeast Ohio Lakes All-District honors were first team choices Jake Sopko, quarterback, receiver Will Heilman, lineman Sam Gerak and running back Gerett Choat. Choat was named the district’s Athlete of the Year.

Westlake’s senior running back JaQuan Hardy, Westlake also earned first-team honors.
