Westlake Schools Give Back

Westlake Schools logoThere is a lot of giving going on in the Westlake Schools this holiday season. Along with the traditional hat and mitten trees at our elementary schools to supply needy children with winter clothing needs, our students are organizing a variety of community service projects:

  • The Lee Burneson Middle School Builder’s Club donated a van full of canned food for Thanksgiving to the Westlake Assistance program. The club also will use its own funds to adopt a family this holiday season. Students will shop for gifts, wrap them and drop them off for the family at the Westlake Community Services Department.
  • Dover Intermediate School students, led by sixth-grade science teacher John Gast, collected and donated toiletries and other necessities for the Homeless Outreach Program at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The Outreach Program also helps with job placement services for veterans, so students also collected lightly worn ties and new dress shirts/interview attire.
  • Students in Westlake High School teacher Elena Prohaska’s computer applications classes made Thanksgiving cards for residents at the Lutheran Home in Westlake. Students used Microsoft Publisher to crate and design cards to wish the residents a Happy Thanksgiving. The cards included fun facts about Thanksgiving. The class focuses on teaching students how to use various applications within the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Special education students in Erin Blahnik’s classes at the middle school are making and selling dog treat jars for the holidays. The reusable treat jar is filled with a dozen homemade dog treats, a holiday pet bandana scarf, and a dog toy. If you are interested in buying a $10 treat jar, filling out the form on our website or email blahnik@wlake.org by Monday, Dec. 14. Orders will be ready on Dec. 18 for pickup at the middle school.
  • LBMS Student Council is collecting donations from each homeroom and “stuffing the showcase” with presents for students at St. Ignatius of Antioch. Each homeroom has a designated gift to bring—stuffed animals, board games, art supplies, sports gear. Student council members will wrap the gifts that are collected and deliver them to St. Ignatius of Antioch in Cleveland before Christmas.
  • LBMS National Honor Society is assisting as elves and craft helpers at the Westlake Early Childhood Cookies with Santa on Dec. 4, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Westlake United Methodist Church.
