Westlake High’s girls basketball team surged to a Div. I District Basketball Title at Elyria Catholic High last night with 39-21 win over Southwestern Conference rival Avon.
The joyous Lady Demons had plenty to celebrate as they cut the nets after the hard-fought championship. It was the third time this season that Westlake has defeated Avon.
Coach Chip Weiss had his Westlake girls playing stifling defense from the start. Intense pressure from the smaller Westlake squad held Avon scoreless through the first quarter as Westlake posted a 6-0 lead after the first 8 minutes.
Avon staged a comeback in the second quarter but went into the locker room at intermission with a 15-9 deficit. The teams played even though the third quarter, but Westlake took control in the final stanza, posting an 18-7 advantage to pull away.
It was Westlake’s first district title win since 2011. The Lady Demons, now 23-2 this year, advance to the regional semifinals. They will play the winner of today’s Toledo Whitmer-Toledo Notre Dame Academy district final on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Norwalk.
Avon sees its season end at 15-8.
