Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club, member of Garden Clubs of Ohio, presented “It Happens In Fall” Flower Show September 17 & 18 at Avon Lake Public Library. The show featured a cornucopia of fall colors and floral designs as well as a wide variety of horticulture. There were also educational exhibits which instill a desire to learn more about pollinators, horticulture, and conservation. National Garden Club judges used “National Garden Clubs Standard System of Awarding” to judge each and every plant, arrangements and exhibits of different categories.
First place winners in The Design Division were Irene Shuster, Playing with Food, Seasonal Color on Display, Time are Changing, and Pint Size; Doreen French, Party Like a Zombie, and Fall Flings; Marianne Stern, Party like a Winner; Audrey Roberts, Party Like a Pilgrim, and Pee Wee; Pam Hoffman, Itsy Bitsy; Char Pulit, Nature Walks; and Jo’C Walker, Back to School.
Special Awards in Design Division were earned by Irene Shuster, Award of Design Excellence, Petite Award, and Designer’s Choice Award; Doreen French, Table Artistry Award; and Audrey Roberts, Club Award, Novice Award.
In the Horticulture Division, Award of Merits in Horticulture were presented to Mary Ann Jasko, One Last Gasp; Linda Borton, See You Next Year; Irene Shuster, Forever Green; Beth Murphy, Turn A New Leaf; Lillian McPherson, Healthy Picks. Anna Burns received Club Award, Mrs. E.J. Weigel Founder Award; Janelle Schubmehl, Award of Horticultural Excellence, Arboreal Award, and Grower’s Choice Award; Doreen French, Grower’s Choice Award and Beth Murphy, Grower’s Choice Award.
Sweepstakes Awards were given to the people who earned the greatest number of points in each Division. Irene Shuster earned the most points in Design and Janelle Schubmehl had the most points in Horticulture.
Special Exhibit’s Division awards were won by Beth Murphy, Educational Award for Pollinators Wanted and Bonnie Armstrong, Artistic Craft Award, Making More With Nature Artistic Craft. First place went to Barb Nahm, Once Upon a Time (Fairy Gardens); Bonnie Armstrong, If I only Had a Brain, (Scarecrows); and Char Pulit, Ring of Color (Wreaths). Several educational exhibits were put on by Avon Lake Public Library and Rock Pile Garden Center.
Results for the Photography Exhibit, “Harvest of Memories” were First Place: Sue Jagoda, Floral Close-up in My Garden; Sue Jagoda, Birds in My Garden; Bev Stives, Butterfly in My Garden with Flowers; and Diana Wyrock, Bee Close-up in My Garden with Flowers.
