With a 42-19 victory over Olmsted Falls, Avon High wrapped up the school’s first-ever Southwestern Conference championship and concluded a perfect 10-0 regular season last Friday at Avon’s Firment Stadium.
“This is arguably the toughest conference in the state,” Eagle head coach Mike Elder told his team in the post-game huddle.
With five of the SWC’s ten team making the Ohio State Athletic Association Div. II Region 6 playoffs, Elder makes a good point. Is there a conference anywhere and in any sport where half the league is good enough to advance?
“Now we start our second season,” said Elder. His Eagles are Number One in the state in the Associated Press Div. 2 poll.
They start their playoff run at home this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against league foe and 8th seed Avon Lake (7-3). The Eagles beat the Shoremen, 31-7, early this season.
Winner will move on to play the winner of Friday’ s Anthony Wayne (4th seed) -Glenville (5th seed) game on Nov. 11. Both teams are 7-3.
In the bottom half of the regional bracket, Springfield (10-0) hosts Westlake (7-3) while Midview (9-1) hosts Olmsted Falls (7-3) Friday. Winners will meet Nov. 11.
The regional championship game will be played Nov. 18 at a site to be determined.
