Westlake Elementary Schools Participate In One School, One Book

Westlake Schools logoBassett, Dover, Hilliard and Holly Lane Elementary Schools in Westlake are participating in a school-wide literacy program, OneSchool, OneBook (OSOB) that involves all PreK-4 students reading the same book at the same time with their families.

This is the third year for the OSOB program in Westlake, but the first year all elementary buildings will participate. The program kicks offFeb. 27, where the book title will be revealed at an assembly in each building. In the week leading up to the launch, students will watch three short videos that will provide clues about the book.

Each day through March 15, all participants will read the same chapter on the same schedule, culminating in an assembly at each building on March 15 celebrating the book. Additional events during those three weeks of the program will include a read aloud of one chapter at Westlake Porter Public Library, and visitors – including Westlake Schools’ administrators, Board of Education members and special community guests – reading a chapter aloud to a classroom and discussing the book and their love of reading with the students. If you are interested in reading a chapter to students, contact Jenny Larcey at Bassett Elementary School at larcey@wlake.org.

Child-friendly Westlake businesses also will partner with the district. Business partners will post a sign in their front windows indicating they are an OSOB business partner. When a family spots the sign, students will search through the business to find a specific character from the book hiding inside. When the child finds the character, the business will provide a ticket to be turned in for a raffle prize at school. Businesses interested in partnering with us should contact Sarah Gorius at Holly Lane Elementary at Gorius@wlake.org.

Additional questions can be directed to Hilliard Elementary Principal Kim Tucker at tucker@wlake.org.
