The Westlake Science Olympiad teams placed first at the Regional Tournament held March 4 at St. Ignatius High School, qualifying both teams to compete at the State Science Olympiad Tournament on April 1 at The Ohio State University.
Both the Division B (7th to 9th grade) and Division C (10th to 12th grade) teams placed first in their respective divisions at regional competition. The tournaments are set up like a track and field meet, where teams compete in a series of 23 STEM-related events that add up to an overall score.
Science Olympiad provides standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams in all 50 states. Each year a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology.
Both Westlake Science Olympiad teams are coached by parent and science enthusiast Laura Lathem.
