The Westlake High School Math Club earned the second place regional award for the 2017 Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) State Tournament held in February at Lorain High School.
Students winning the team award and scoring individually on the site’s Top 20 list include juniors Ryan Karpuszka, Cory DuBois, Donovan DuBois and sophomore Mihir Shetty. Ryan’s individuals score also ranked him ninth in the state and earned him a spot in the Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad, where he will participate in a full day of competition, including a one-hour written test that covers all high school math topics. The contest will be held April 1 at Capital University in Columbus.
The OCTM Tournament is designed to promote student interest in mathematics and to recognize outstanding high school math programs.
WHS Math Club adviser Anne Dill said the tournament and Olympiad not only tests students’ skills, but also their strategy and ability to analyze challenging questions while problem solving in a cooperative and collaborative manner with other mathematicians.
