Hajek began volunteering at the library in 2003 and has amassed over 1,400 hours of volunteer time. A Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale volunteer, he has hauled thousands of book from storage areas to the sale rooms and has also spent many hours price checking special books, which are sold on Ebay or in the Book Sale at special prices. His efforts have garnered thousands of dollars more in revenue, meaning the Friends of the Library has been able to give more to the library for special needs, such as the recent renovation, and the Summer Reading Program and STEAM Week.
“Jim’s efforts have been invaluable to both the Friends and the Library,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels. “This award is well deserved.”
The Myrna Chelko Award is given annually to a library volunteer who exhibits the same dedication to serving the library as did Myrna Chelko, a long-time library volunteer who helped establish the Friends of the Library and served on the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees selects the recipient, taking into consideration such criteria as years and hours of service, special library projects, advocacy, ability to inspire others, creativity and innovation.
