Avon Heritage Elementary School 5th Grade Science Teacher and Westlake resident Sarah Horbol ran the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon last month and finished third overall in the Women’s elite division. She finished behind two women from Ethiopia and her overall time was under three hours, a personal best (2:56:31). She is 32-years-old, but at the time of the race, she was 31.
Sarah has participated in the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon 3 times (2014, 2016, and 2017). She has run a total of four marathons (three in Cleveland and one in Boston 2015) and has been running since she joined the track team in third-grade at St. Bernadette’s in Westlake. Sarah ran track in high school but not college and always run as a way to exercise and stay in shape. Sarah decided to challenge herself and run a marathon in 2014.
Sarah runs 4-5 days per week. She actually changes into her running clothes at school and runs right away when she gets home or goes to the Metroparks to make sure to get a run in. According to Horbol, it can take some motivation to go running after a long day of teaching but she never skips. She also always runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
