Celebrate Westlake 2017 is a Hit!

Celebrate Westlake, Northern Ohio’s Premier 5-Mile Run and major fundraiser for dozens of local charities, was a success as over 750 runners took part in the annual Labor Day Weekend event on the grounds of University Hospitals St. John Medical Center Sat., Sept. 2.

“The race was wonderful, thank you to all of our participants, sponsors, and volunteers. We could not do this without you. We look forward to seeing you again next year on Saturday, September 1, 2018!” said Race Founder Bud Hagy, who started Celebrate Westlake back in 1991.

This year’s community spirit included a special twist as race participants were asked to bring a donation for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. “The response was overwhelming,” said Hagy. “We are grateful to you all for your generosity and spirit of giving at the race. We filled the back of three city trucks for Houston. Thank you. Columbia Road Baptist Church is still collecting donations if you or your friends and family would like to donate. Standing Tall…Celebrate Westlake 2017 was a huge success on Sept. 2 with nearly 800 runners taking place in the annual Labor Day tradition. Westlake Officer Rick Grane (center) was standing tall as Mayor Dennis Clough and Celebrate Westlake founder Bud Hagy cited the tireless work he volunteers each year in helping organize the event.

As usual, large donations were also given to local charities. This year, an additional $2000 was donated to the Red Cross and $1000 to Westlake Meals on Wheels.

Celebrate Westlake is made up of a morning events, highlighted by a 5 Mile Run. Winner was James Sjostrom of Aurora in 25:44. Female winner was Iveen Chepkemoi in 25:58. In the 5K, former Lakewood High cross country ace Nick Boatman won in 17:31 while Rebecca Szabo of North Olmsted won in 2. 31 for the ladies. All race results can be found at 2017 Race Results.

The day was made complete with a series of kids races, lively DJ music and a health and fitness expo.
