The Scholastic Games radio quiz, featuring academic teams from Lorain County high schools, continued its series of weekly programs on WEOL (AM 930) on Monday when Avon Lake scored a 510 to 130 win over Keystone High.
Avon Lake was represented by Irwin Deng, Alex Petroff, and team captain Connor McNeill, who won the program’s “Standout Scholar Award,” a $50 prize given to the student judged to have contributed the most to his or her team each week. Keystone’s team consisted of Annali Perez, Matthew Lee, and team captain Luke Peters.
It was the fast-moving final round that Avon Lake piled on 360 points, as McNeill earned his scholar award with buzzer quickness and correct responses to tossup and bonus questions. Last week’s record-breaking winning score for a season opener—440 scored by Oberlin High School—looked like it might be a season high, but the team was outscored in the very next program by Avon Lake!
The teams are guided by faculty advisors. Mike Kaminski and Ryan Smylie are co-advisors for the Avon Lake team and Tom Habenicht advises the Keystone team.
