July Events at Westlake Porter Public Library

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s July, 2018 calendar of events:

Sunday, July 1 (1-4:30 p.m.) Domino Topplers of Cleveland – Create intricate designs, shapes, and structures with colorful dominoes. When finished, all will be knocked down in a “domino effect” fashion. Learn how to build different domino techniques while letting your creativity go wild! Ages 8-14. Registration begins June 24.

Mondays July 2 and 23 (4-5 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 3-8.

Tuesdays, July 3, 10 and 17 (3-4 p.m.) Summer Brain Games – Keep up your skills during summer vacation! Kids in grades 1-3 can drop in each week for grade-appropriate educational games. Teen volunteers and staff will be on hand to assist. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, July 3 (6-8 p.m.) Happy Birthday, America! – Join us in the Youth Services Department as we get ready to celebrate July 4th with a variety of red, white, and blue crafts! No registration necessary.

Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 (2-3:30 p.m.) Teen Crafts – Bring out your creativity every Thursday throughout the summer! Drop-in for a new craft each week. Grades 7-12. No registration necessary.

Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19 and 26 (6:30-8 p.m.) and Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25 (4-5:30 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with one of the reading therapy dogs! Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Movies @ the Library! – Join us from 2-4 p.m. on Fridays for summer movie matinées. Rated PG. Registration begins one week before each session. July 6: There are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if LEGO® Batman wants to save the city from The Joler’s hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others, and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. July 13: Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he’s never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue and Rose reads an enticing headline, they both set out on epic quests to find what they’re missing. July 20: Paddington, now happily settled with the Brown family and a popular member of the local community, has a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, only for the gift to be stolen. July 27: In Disney Pixar’s extraordinary adventure, a boy who dreams of becoming a great musician embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries behind his ancestor’s stories and traditions.

Friday, July 6 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Got Science? – Join us for a fun afternoon as we explore beach activities and experiments. Grades 1 and 2. Registration begins June 29.

Saturday, July 7 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Researching Your Roots – This class is an intro to Ancestry.com as well as other online resources that can be used to research your family. Bring the names and dates of relatives that you do know. This class will allow time for individual research during class. Please register.

Saturday, July 7 (4-5:30 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – This month’s topic: Rockets! Make and test various rockets. Grades 3-5. Registration begins June 30.

Sunday, July 8 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club Picnic – We’ll enjoy a light picnic with our dolls before engaging in outdoor picnic games and activities on the side lawn. Ages 6-11. Registration begins July 1.

Monday, July 9 (2-4 p.m.) Hogwarts Summer School – Geek out on Harry Potter and attend Hogwarts for an afternoon! Get sorted into your house, take a potions class, eat in the dining hall, and do lots of crafts with all the other muggles wanting to be wizards! Wizard attire is encouraged! Grades 5-9. Registration begins July 2.

Monday, July 9 (6:30-7:15 p.m.); Saturday, July 14 and Friday, July 27 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Monday, July 9 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Portable Apps and Linux – Want to have access to all of your programs and files everywhere you go? Just bring a USB drive with you and you can access your saved passwords and email addresses, favorite free programs, and more with Portable Apps. You can also use that USB to boot almost any computer into Linux, a free operating system that’s not Windows nor MAC OS, but works almost the same way. Learn all about it here! Please register.

Tuesday, July 10 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, July 10 (3-3:45 p.m.) Kids in the Kitchen – Learn basic cooking skills with fast, simple, no-bake recipes for kids! For students ages 8-12 with special needs and their typical peers. If you have an allergy or special diet concern, please contact the Youth Services Department at 440-250-5471 for a complete list of ingredients. Registration begins July 3.

Tuesday, July 10 (6:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Coffee and Chat – This month’s topic: Reaching Out for Support – Do you want to reach out and meet other families on a similar journey but don’t know how? Join us for an informal discussion about how to find others like you and the support you need. We also encourage families to attend who already have a strong network and are willing to mentor others. Free, supervised children’s activities are available, but adults and children must register separately. Coffee is donated by Starbucks Coffee Company. Tuesday, July 10 (6:30-8 p.m.) Teen Chocolympics – How much do you love chocolate? Test your knowledge of your favorite candies and compete in some delicious chocolate-themed challenges. *If you have allergy concerns please contact Youth Services. Grades 7-12. Registration begins July 3.

Tuesday, July 10 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In July we’ll discuss The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher.

Wednesdays, July 11, 18 and 25 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, July 11 (2-3 p.m.) Coding for Kids – Learn computer programming by designing video games that can be shared and played with friends! Grades 3-6. Registration begins July 4.

Wednesday, July 11 (3-4 p.m.) Robotics for Kids – Pair up to create, program, and animate robots using LEGO bricks then experiment with other kids in friendly competitions. Grades 3-6. Registration begins July 4.

Wednesday, July 11 (7-7:45 p.m.) Mix-It-Up! – Let’s mix it up with sand at our exploration stations! Use your senses as we have fun playing and discovering. Ages 4-6. Registration begins July 4.

Thursday, July 12 (11 a.m.-Noon) Crafty Adults – Create art of your own based on the work of a famous artist or holiday. Specifically for ages 18 and up with developmental or intellectual disabilities. No registration required.

Thursday, July 12 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month, a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read the article prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursday, July 12 (2:30-5 p.m.) In a Galaxy Far, Far Away with Lego® – Bricks4Kidz will help participants build a Millennium Falcon and R2D2, do a cool Star Wars mosaic, and even make a craft to take home! Grades 3-5. Registration begins July 5.

Thursday, July 12 (7-8 p.m.) Rock and Roll History: The Cleveland Connection – Cleveland rocks…and so does learning about music! This program traces Cleveland’s influence in the development of Rock and Roll music from the 1950’s to the present day. Important events in local Rock and Roll history will be discussed. Emphasis will be given to local musical performance venues, both past and present, Northeast Ohio musical groups and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Please register.

Friday, July 13 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Saturday, July 14 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Saturday, July 14 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) LEGO® Day at the Library – NEOLUG returns with more LEGO creations and interactive displays to get your creative juices flowing. No registration required.

Saturdays, July 14 & 28 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Saturday, July 14 (3:30-4 p.m.) Family Storytime – An interactive family storytime featuring books, rhymes, songs, movement, and a small craft. For families with children ages 2-6. No registration required.

Sunday, July 15 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 3-6. Registration begins July 8.

Monday, July 16 (1-2 p.m. OR 4-5 p.m.) COSI on Wheels: Energy! – Experiment with electricity, magnetism, and motion while you help COSI’s Inventor complete their greatest creation. Build circuits, create chain reactions, and move objects without touching them while learning more about forces and energy. No registration necessary.

Monday, July 16 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses that imitate animals and nature. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, July 16 (6-8 p.m.) Rockin’ Games – Stop by the Youth Services area to play games using rocks…Mancala, Checkers, Tic-Tac-Toe and more. Finally, create your own rockin’ game to take home! No registration required.

Monday, July 16 (6:30-7 p.m.) Digital Storytime – Songs, rhymes, and stories with multimedia elements such as video clips, music and animation. For children up to age 6 and a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, July 16 (7-8 p.m.) Cyber Security: What Everyone Needs to Know – Security expert David Kennedy, founder of TrustedSec and Binary Defense and former Chief Security Officer for Diebold Incorporated, will talk about the steps that everyone should take to keep their information and computers secure. Please register.

Tuesday, July 17 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, July 17 (1-3 p.m.) Career: Winning 101 – Interviewing for Jobs in 2018 – Are you prepared to have a successful interview today? Learn some basic expectations of the interviewer with extra tips from employers on how to differentiate yourself from other candidates, answer difficult questions, discuss salary needs, and WIN. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, July 17 (2-3 p.m. OR 3:30-4:30 p.m.) Makey Makey – Create a banana piano, play video games with Play-Doh, and use your fellow humans to play the bongos with Makey Makey, which can turn any conductive material into a keyboard! Geared towards grades 3-5. Please register.

Tuesday, July 17 (6-7 p.m.) Egg Splatter Painting – Have you ever wanted to make a beautiful piece of art and have fun doing it? Choose your colors, fill your eggs and throw them at your canvas. When you’re finished take home your one of a kind creation! Grades 5-6. Registration begins July 10.

Tuesdays, July 17 and 31 (6-7 p.m.) Heartfulness Meditation – Heartfulness is a simple, practical way to regulate the mind and experience the heart’s unlimited resources. An experienced trainer will guide you through the various aspects of heartfulness meditation practice. Registration begins one month before each session.

Wednesday, July 18 (11-11:45 a.m.) WPPL’s Annual Egg Drop – Celebrate engineering during STEAM week by designing a protective device for an egg. Come to the Porter room from 11-11:45 to build your creation then join us at noon in the library lobby to test all of the devices in the official egg drop! No registration required.

Wednesday, July 18 (4-5 p.m.) Marshmallow Challenge – The task is simple: teams must build a free-standing structure out of spaghetti, tape, string, and a single marshmallow… which team can succeed in building the tallest tower?! Grades 5-9. Registration begins July 11.

Wednesday, July 18 (7-8 p.m.) Alternatives to Cable TV – Frustrated with cable service? This program will help you sort through the variety of viewing alternatives available. Learn about digital media players, streaming services, and additional options. Please register.

Thursday, July 19 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) CPR Training – CPR and AED certification for adult, child, and infant. Instruction by certified instructor/Paramedic Ken Hehnen. Must be 13 years of age. Please register.

Saturday, June 9 (2-3 p.m.) 3D Printing Orientation – In order to use the library’s new 3D printer, you’ll need to take this orientation first. Learn library policies about using it, how to download a 3D-printable object, and how to prepare it for a great print.

Thursday, July 19 (7-8:30 p.m.) Behind the Scenes with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra – Learn the behind-the-scenes stories about the Cleveland Pops Orchestra that you won’t hear anywhere else—the funny, as well as the unexpected! Please register.

Friday, July 20 (11-11:45 a.m.) Party with Pete the Cat – Calling all Pete the Cat fans! Put on your favorite shoes and head on over for a Pete the Cat storytime! Storytime will feature silly stories, songs, and a craft or two! Ages 3-6. Registration begins July 13.

Friday, July 20 (1-2:30 p.m.) Solve Problems with littleBits – Learn math concepts while having fun! Get challenges and solve problems with littleBits, snap-together electronic circuits. Grades 3-5. Registration begins July 13.

Saturday, July 21 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturday, July 21 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Tuesday, July 24 (2-3:30 p.m.) Travel Club: Louisville – Come and hear about all of the fun things to do and see in Louisville, Kentucky. Please register.

Tuesday, July 24 (7-8 p.m.) An Evening of Jazz with The Biasella Trio – Come enjoy the sounds of this wonderful local jazz ensemble! Please register.

Wednesday, July 25 (4-5 p.m.) Breakout: Island Breakout – Similar to an escape room, this breakout challenge crash lands you on a deserted island to test your ability to work together and solve all the clues that’ll help you get off the island! Can you break out?! Grades 7-12. Registration begins July 18.

Wednesday, July 25 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The July selection is Camino Island by John Grisham.

Thursday, July 26 (10-10:30 a.m.) Introduction to Apps: STEAM – A quick, interactive training on apps that will help boost your toddler and preschooler’s STEAM skills. Children are welcome to attend a playtime with Youth Services staff while parents attend the training. Please register all children participating. Caregivers are welcome to attend without children, but please call 440-250-5471 to register beginning July 19. Ages 6 months to 10 years, but apps introduced best fit ages 2-6.

Friday, July 27 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Friday, July 27 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday – Join Mrs. K as we explore the wonders of our world. How is the earth like a big magnet? Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take home project. Ages 4-6. Registration begins July 20.

Saturday, July 28 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Sunday, July 29 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Sunday, July 29 (2-3 p.m.) Fancy Nancy Bonjour Butterfly Tea Party! – Bonjour! (That’s fancy for hello!) You are invited to a Fancy Nancy Tea Party to create a spectacular butterfly craft, play glamorous games, and enjoy tasty refreshments! Ooh la la! Ages 5-8. Registration begins July 22.

Monday, July 30 (6-8 p.m.) Friends’ Ice Cream Social – Join the Friends of Porter Public Library for their annual ice cream social featuring sundaes from Mitchell’s Ice Cream and family entertainment!
