Most people know that a regular walking program can help us maintain our weight, our mood and our balance and coordination.
According to Harvard Medical School, walking can counteract the effects of weight-promoting genes, helps tame a sweet tooth, reduces the risk of developing breast cancer (even for women with high risk factors), eases joint pain (and potentially even prevents arthritis from forming in the first place) and boosts immune function.
The Westlake Senior and Community Services Department and 6 other area senior centers are participating in the “Bring It On! Senior Walking and Wellness Challenge” sponsored by UH St. John Medical Center (UH SJMC).
You do not have to be a current senior center member to join Team Westlake. Just be 50 plus!
Receive a free pedometer and begin with a health screening on Thursday, August 2, and end with a follow up on Thursday, September 13. At the awards ceremony on Friday, September 14, individual prizes and the winning senior center will be announced.
