Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s August, 2018 calendar of events:

August 1 Westlake-Westshore Arts Council’s Annual Juried Art Show begins

Wednesdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, August 1 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursday, August 2 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursdays, August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturday, August 4 (10-11:30 a.m.) Mindfulness and Meditation – Mello Mitchell returns to instruct us in simple meditation techniques to reduce anxiety and discover inner peace. We’ll also explore the history of meditation, the research behind its effectiveness, benefits and how to establish a successful practice. Appropriate for all experience levels. Please register.

Saturday, August 4 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, August 4 (2-3 p.m.) Keyboarding for Kids – Before school starts, brush up on keyboarding skills! This class for kids entering the 3rd and 4th grade will show techniques for learning how to type. Must have a valid email address. Grades 3-4. Registration begins July 28.

Saturday, August 4 (4-5:30 p.m.) STEAMMaker LabThis month’s topic: Whatever Floats Your Boat! Learn about buoyancy and density through experimentation. Make your own toy boat! Grades 3-5. Registration begins July 28.

Monday, August 6 (1-5:30 p.m.), Tuesday, August 7 (1-8 p.m.), Wednesday, August 8 (2-6:30 p.m.) and Thursday, August 9 (1-6:30 p.m.) WPPL Around the World Film Festival – Join us in the afternoon/evening hours to view a selection of foreign films (subtitled). Popcorn provided! Please register.

Mondays August 6, 13, 20 and 27 (4-5 p.m.) Tween Code Club – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Registration begins one week before each session. Grades 3-8.

Mondays, August 6, 13, and 20 (7-8:30 p.m.) SCORE Cleveland Nonprofit Series – Starting a nonprofit can be confusing and complex. This three-part series will give you a general understanding about starting a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization. Please register. Topics are as follows: August 6: Learn the difference between the nonprofit and for profit sectors, how non-profits are funded, what their governing principles are, and the difference between a mission-driven versus profit-driven organization. August 13: The legal requirements and necessary paperwork for filing for nonprofit status, ways to streamline the process, how to recruit board members, and more. August 20: Funding – where to look for grant opportunities, how to determine eligibility requirements, determining whether or not your organization meets them, and how to write a grant application.

Tuesday, August 7 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Tuesday, August 7 (2-2:45 p.m.) Dance Party! – Wear your dancing shoes to our summer Dance Party! Join the fun as we dance to many of your all-time favorites including the Chicken Dance, Conga, Hokey Pokey and more! No registration, but space is limited. All ages with a grown-up.

Thursday, August 9 (11 a.m.-Noon) Crafty Adults – Create art of your own based on the work of a famous artist or holiday. Specifically for ages 18 and up with developmental or intellectual disabilities. No registration required.

Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12 (2-8 p.m.) Westlake Music Festival – Join us at the library on Saturday and at the Westlake Recreation Center on Sunday for a weekend of music, entertainment and family fun. A variety of musicians and bands will be playing throughout both afternoons, kicking off with kids’ music at 2 p.m. Food vendors, face painting and more will also be onsite! Brought to you by Westlake Porter Public Library and The City of Westlake.

Saturday, August 11 (10-11:30 a.m.) Beginning Coding for Adults – Learn the basics of coding through self-paced online modules. An instructor will be on hand to help get you started and to facilitate lessons. Please register.

Saturdays, August 11 and 18 (10-11:15 a.m.) Tai Chi for Health – Discover the healing effects of this movement therapy. Wear comfortable clothing. Held outdoors, weather permitting. Registration begins August 1.

Saturday, August 11 (10:30-11:15 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturdays, August 11 & 25 (2-3 p.m.) Brick Builders – Love those bricks? Bring your ideas and imagination! Lego® and Duplo® bricks provided. For ages 3-12. No registration required.

Saturday, August 11 (2-3 p.m.) Google Drive Basics – Learn how to use Google Drive to work with and store files. Create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Prerequisites: Google account. Please register.

Sunday, August 12 (2-3:30 p.m.) Boredom Busters! – Are you bored? Drop by the Storytime Room and join in the fun! We will have different activities available each month. All ages welcome! No registration necessary!

Sunday, August 12 (3-4 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! This month’s artist is Salvador Dali. Grades 3-6. Please register.

Monday, August 13 (1-1:30 p.m.) Yoga Time! – This is a perfect way to introduce yoga and practice simple poses that imitate animals and nature. Remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel or yoga mat. Ages 3 and up with a caregiver. No registration required.

Monday, August 13 (6-7:30 p.m.) Sensory-Friendly Movie – A sensory-friendly environment including more light, less sound and the option to move around the room will help children with special needs and their families enjoy this free movie screening. All ages. Registration begins August 6.

Monday, August 13 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Exploring Our Makerspace Technology – WPPL has a variety of makerspace technology that you can use (nearly) any time. Come see what we have, and what you can do with it! Please register.

Tuesday, August 14 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, August 14 (7 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In August we’ll discuss The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman.

Wednesday, August 15 (1-6 p.m.) Foundation Center: In the Community – Foundation Center Midwest staff will provide office hours and Foundation Directory Online tutorials at the library. They’ll also assist you with questions on proposal writing, project budgeting, fundraising planning, capacity building, and any other philanthropy and nonprofit management issues. No registration necessary.

Thursday, August 16 (2-3 p.m.) Customize Your Locker! – You’ll have the coolest locker in school when you customize it with these fun–and useful–crafts! Grades 5-7. Registration begins August 9.

Thursday, August 16 (7-8 p.m.) Let’s Talk About Beer Making with Sibling Revelry Brewery – A brew master from Sibling Revelry will satisfy your curiosity about the ins and outs of brewing. Please register.

Thursday, August 16 (7-7:30 p.m.) Parachute Play! – Get ready to jump and move with music, stories and the parachute. Bring your energy, mom, dad, or other caregiver to Parachute Play! Ages 4-6. Registration begins August 9.

Friday, August 17 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) Puma Party! – It’s Suma the Puma’s first birthday! Help us celebrate with crafts and activities. While supplies last. No registration required.

Saturday, August 18 (2-4 p.m.) Carry Out Crafts – Stop by the Youth Services Department to see what our featured craft is this afternoon. We have all the supplies you’ll need to create something fantastic! No registration required.

Saturday, August 18 (3-5 p.m.) Anime Club – A great club for anime and manga lovers! All otakus and newbies are welcome! Grades 7 to adult. No registration required.

Sunday, August 19 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Maryellen Larkin – It’s 1954 and Maryellen Larkin, a 4th grader, wants to stand out, but with five brothers and sisters, it’s not so easy. We’ll learn more about living in the 1050s while listening to the music of the time and completing a craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins August 12.

Tuesday, August 21 (1-3 p.m.) Career: It’s Who You Know – Networking Made Easy – Applying online all day is not the answer to finding the right position. You will probably get your job from someone you know now who knows someone else. Learn tips to use your network the right way and slide into the right spot. No registration required.

Wednesday, August 22 (10-11:30 a.m.) Introduction to Streaming Music – This class will give an overview of both free library streaming services as well as services such as Pandora and Spotify. Learn what might work best for you, and how to use these services on your computer or mobile devices. If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Wednesday, August 22 (2 p.m.) Wednesday Afternoon Book Discussion – The August selection is The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

Wednesday, August 22 (3:45-5 p.m.) Tween Scene (Back to School Edition) – Celebrate your first day back to school! Play video or board games, or just relax with your friends. Snacks will be provided. Grades 5-6. No registration necessary.

Friday, August 24 (10 a.m.-Noon) Fiber Fanatics – A time for needlecrafters to share, solve problems, and show off.

Friday, August 24 (3:30-4:15 p.m.) Fun Science Friday: Fabulous Fish – Join Mrs. K as we explore the wonders of our world. Who lives in our oceans and lakes? We’ll learn what makes fish so special, fins and scales included. Discoveries will be made through hands-on experiments, active participation and a simple take-home project. Ages 4-6. Registration begins August 17.

Saturday, August 25 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Family Fun Craft Day – It’s National Family Fun Month! Stop by and celebrate in the Youth Services Department with family friendly crafts. No registration required.

Saturday, August 25 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Pokemon Fun! – A fun morning of Pokemon-themed play, prizes, and crafts! Ages 6-11. No registration required.

Saturday, August 25 (2-3:30 p.m.) Meet the Artist Reception – Please join the Westlake-Westshore Arts Council and greet the artists from the annual juried arts show.

Sunday, August 26 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Tuesday, August 28 (9:30-10 a.m.) Stories and Signs – Enjoy an interactive storytime while learning a few words in sign language! Ages 0-3, siblings welcome. No registration required.

Wednesday, August 29 (10-11 a.m.) Discover eBooks with Overdrive – Yes, the library has free eBooks! Come learn how to check out eBooks and eAudiobooks using Overdrive and its free app, Libby. Registration begins July 30.

Tuesday, August 29 (7-7:30 p.m.) Bedtime Stories – Put on your pajamas and join Mrs. K. as we unwind at the end of the day with stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities. This month: A Firefly Night. Ages 4-6. Siblings welcome. No registration required.

Thursday, August 30 (7-8:30 p.m.) Connections from the Hereafter – Join us for an evening with local authors Jacqueline Davieau and Todd Schelat for a comforting presentation on life after death, and how our loved ones give us signals on a daily basis to reassure us that we are never alone. Jacqueline and Todd will conclude their presentation with a book signing. Copies of their book will be available for purchase. Please register.

Friday, August 31 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.
