Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s early January, 2019 calendar of events:

Tuesday, January 1 – New Year’s Day – Library closed

Wednesdays, January 2, 9 and 16 (10:15 & 11 a.m.) Let’s Sing and Dance! – Sing and move to the music with Miss Nancy! For children ages 2-6 with a caregiver. Please arrive early to receive a ticket.

Wednesday, January 2 (1-2:30 p.m.) Cuyahoga West Genealogy Society Help Session – Please join the genealogy group for an informal walk-in help session.

Wednesday, January 2 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Calling all horror film fans: Join us for another creepy classic from the vault…if you dare! New members are always welcome, but children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult. Please register.

Thursdays, January 3 and 10 (1-7 p.m.) American Red Cross Bloodmobile

Thursday, January 3 (2-4 p.m.) Movies @ Your Library – Join us for a movie matinee in which a villains maniacal for world domination sidetracks five teenage superheroes who dream of Hollywood stardom. Rated PG. All ages. Registration begins December 27.

Mondays, January 7 and 14 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge on Monday afternoons! We have computers, video games, board games, snacks, and more! For grades 7-12 only. No registration required.

Monday, January 7 (6:30-7:15 p.m.) and Saturday, January 19 (10-11:15 a.m) Adapted Storytime – Children with varying learning styles and abilities learn in a safe, supportive environment where respect and appreciation for differences are encouraged. This 30 minute storytime, followed by time for socialization, is designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime experience. Content is geared toward ages 3-7, but all ages are welcome. Siblings may also attend, but must register separately. Registration begins one week before each session.

Tuesday, January 8 (10-11:30 a.m.) eBooks, Streaming Music, Digital Movies, and More! – Learn how to access free eBooks and eAudiobooks, digital music, streaming movies, and more! Please bring your own device. The class will include an open lab. Please register.

Tuesday, January 8 (1-3 p.m.) Career: LinkedIn Tips for Job Seekers – On LinkedIn but have a weak profile? Not on LinkedIn yet? Learn techniques to set up and maintain a great profile and better utilize this necessary social media tool to help you meet people who can assist in your job search. No registration required.

Tuesday, January 8 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Discussion – In January we’ll discuss Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens.

Wednesdays, January 9 and 16 (4-5:30 p.m.) and Thursdays, January 10 and 17 (6:30-8 p.m.) Bow Wow Books – Stop by Youth Services to sign up for a 10-minute reading time with a reading therapy dog. Registration begins each Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m.

Thursday, January 10 (10-11:30 a.m.) Intro to Smartphones – Learn the basics of using smartphones, such as screen brightness, wifi settings, adding apps, and more! If bringing your device, please bring all account passwords. Please register.

Thursday, January 10 (2-3:30 p.m.) Great Decisions Discussion Program on World Affairs – Discuss critical global issues facing America today. At the beginning of each month a copy of the article may be picked up at the Ask Us Desk. Please read prior to the meeting. Please register.

Thursdays, January 10 and 17 (4-5 p.m.) Code Club! – Learn how to build an app, design a video game, and change the world through code! Grades 3-4. Registration begins one week before each session.

Friday, January 11 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) and Saturday, January 12 (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.) Connecting for Kids’Music Therapy & More^SM – For families and their children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Join us for a hands-on program designed to teach families how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills as well as behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. Each session is 30 minutes. Friday, January 11 (10-10:45 a.m.) Come Play With Me! – Open playtime with age-appropriate toys. For children ages 2-5 with a caring adult. Siblings welcome! No registration required.

Saturday, January 12 (10:30-11 a.m.) Mother Goose On the Loose! – An interactive storytime featuring simple books, rhymes, songs and movement. For ages birth-3 years old with a caregiver. No registration required.

Saturday, January 12 (1 and 2:30 p.m.) Conneting for Kids’ Elementary Experiences^SM – These hands-on training programs are designed for families and their children (ages 7-12 years) who are struggling. Families will learn targeted skills together and will leave with ideas and resources to use at home. Adults are expected to participate in the program with their children. Siblings (ages 7-12 years) may also attend but must register separately. Topic: Keys to Conversation: Does your child get left out of peer conversations because he doesn’t know how to join in or what to say? Is your child’s ability to make friends hindered by her poor communication skills? Wendi Willmer, MA, CCC-SLP, of Busy Hands Bright Minds LLC, will teach attendees simple conversation strategy skills such as choosing an interesting topic, joining a conversation with friends, continuing a conversation appropriately and switching topics.  Families will have the opportunity to interact with each other and with other attendees to practice what they have learned. Saturday, January 12 (3:30-5 p.m.) STEAMMaker Lab – Participate in various cold weather STEAM experiments! Grades 3-5. Registration begins January 55.

Sunday, January 13 (2-3 p.m.) American Girl Doll Club: Grace Thomas – Grace loves to bake with friends and invent new recipes. We will play games and make a related craft. Ages 6-11. Registration begins January 6.

Sunday, January 13 (2-4 p.m.) Chess Club – Hone your chess skills or learn how to play the game. Recommended for ages 6+, but all ages are welcome. If you have a chess set, please bring it with you. No registration necessary.

Monday, January 14 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Nintendo Labo – Learn about and experiment with Nintendo Labo, DIY cardboard kits made for the Nintendo Switch. Make “Toy-Con” projects with your creations, and discover how they work! All ages welcome. Please register.

Tuesday, January 15 (10:30-11:30 a.m.) Tablet Tuesday User Group – This group will share tips and tricks with each other about using iPads and Android Tablets. Kindle Fire users welcome! Please bring your devices. Please register.

Tuesday, January 15 (6:30 p.m.) Connecting for Kids’ Coffee and Chat – Join our interactive support group and meet other families facing similar struggles. This group is for families of children ages 0-12 years. Free, supervised children’s activities are available, but adults and children must register separately. Topic: Viewing of the movie “The Unconditional”: The Krakowiak Family of Olmsted Falls is featured in this unflinching documentary of their daily life caring for two children with complex needs. Join us to view and discuss the film with the Krakowiak Family and then have an opportunity to share your own experiences caring for your children.
