Bay High senior Matthew Cover eclipsed the school career wins record in wrestling as the Rockets faced Holy Name and Rocky River in double-dual meet action Thursday, Jan. 24.
Earning pins in both his matches, Matthew made it a perfect Senior Night as his second victory of the evening over Rocky River at 195-pounds put him at an incredible 151 wins as member of the Rocket varsity.
Matthew was a third place winner at the 2018 OHSAA Div. II championships. He is 25-2 so far this season.
His other mat accomplishments include:
-2017 USA Ohio Cadet 195lb Freestyle and Greco State Champion
-2017 USAW Cadet 195lb Freestyle National Runner-up
-2017 USAW Cadet 195lb Greco National Championships 4th
-2018 Ohio High School State Tournament 195lb 3rd
-2108 USA Ohio Junior 195lb Freestyle and Greco State Champion.
“When I was only 4 years old, my dad introduced me to wrestling and I’ve loved it ever since,” reports Matthew. His dad, Ryan Cover, is head coach at Bay.
“The sport has taught me that there are times of adversity and also that nothing is given and everything is earned. It has also shown me that I can achieve anything as long as I put in the time. After being a team captain this year I know the qualities needed to be both a good leader and a good teammate. As for my academic career I currently have a 3.8 GPA and I’ve set goals such as graduating with honors and scoring well on the ACT and SAT tests so that I can set myself up for good opportunities in college and for my life after wrestling. I’ve learned that wrestling is a battle and one I hope to continue in college someday.”
