Westlake State of the City 2019

Mayor Clough presents his annual State of the City address.

Serving as Mayor of Westlake since 1986, Dennis Clough is the first to credit the many elements of the community that have worked together to make Westlake Cuyahoga County’s leader of the Cleveland west shore.

“The City is successful because of its citizens, schools, library, employees, business community and other partners,” said Mayor Clough as he delivered his annual State of the City address at Carrabba’s Italian Grill the afternoon of March 12. “We can continue our success through the efforts and participation of the entire community.”

Guiding Westlake from its semi-rural days to bustling regional hub, Mayor Clough has seen the population of the community grow from 19,483 in 1986 to over 32,000 residents today!

The city’s General Fund balance has grown to $37,352,600 in 2018 from $969,000 in 1986, and the community’s debt has shrunk from $13,155,000 in 1986 to $4,660,000 in 2018.

In that time, the total assessed value of all of Westlake has grown to over $1.5 billion, reaching $1,578,823,180 after a 8.8% gain in 2018.

The City has continued its goal to also keep residential and commercial taxes low,  and property tax rates remain the lowest among comparable suburban communities.

Westlake is also a busy place. Police responded to over 40,000 calls for service in 2018 and made 4,680 arrests. There were 949 motor vehicle accidents. 5,611 calls came in relating to Fire, EMS, Haz-Mat and service, and there were 16,405 Fire and EMS calls dispatched by Westcom, located at UH St. John.

While much of Westlake has been developed under Mayor Clough’s leadership, improvements are coming in 2019. They include:

– A new Aquatics Center at Clague Park. The attraction will include a 4,600 sq. ft. Bath House, Activity Pool with Interactive Water Feature, Lazy River with Sprays and Jets, Lap Pool with Diving Well, Extension with Climbing Wall and New Plunge Pool. Estimated Completion-May, 2019.

– A new Community Center will encompass a 25,485 sq. ft. facility located near the Tennis Courts at the Westlake Recreation Center. It will include an Auditorium, Assembly/Dining Room, Exercise Studio, Fitness Room, Kitchen, Pantry and Courtyard.
