RRHS Drama Department Presents ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ as Spring Musical

Seventy-five students from Rocky River High School (RRHS) are excited to present this year’s spring musical, Singin’ in the Rain, which will run from April 4-6 in the RRHS Auditorium.

With auditions held in the fall, the large student cast began rehearsals in January led by Drama Department advisor Jennifer Garver.

Considered by some as the greatest movie musical of all time, this performance of Singin’ in the Rain is a faithfully and lovingly adapted rendition by Broadway legends Betty Comden and Adolph Green, based on the original award-winning screenplay. Singin’ in the Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline—the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers.

The department selected this musical because it was more of a classical style than previous shows put on by Rocky River High School students, accompanied by a 16-student orchestra.

“Recently, the students put on more contemporary shows compared to Singin’ in the Rain,” Garver said. “This show offers students new styles and techniques of performing and dancing, which means new challenges. It also allows students to gain new skills, such as tap dancing. From a production standpoint, the students had to come up with a way to make it rain indoors.”

The two leading roles in the production of Kathy Selden and Don Lockwood will be played by Rocky River High School students Sabrina Duke and Cameron Morris, respectively. According to Garver, the entire cast has taken ownership of the production and are proud of the hard work they have put in since January.

“The entire cast is motivated and dedicated, and it shows in every technical aspect of the performance,” Garver said. “The audience can expect an outstanding performance. There’s a very strong cast of seniors who have been in productions since their freshman year and have matured as performers.”

Tickets for the musical are $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for senior citizens and children five and under.
