One District, One Book Kicks Off in Avon Lake

All four Avon Lake City Schools elementary schools kicked off the One District, One Book: Reading as a Community, initiative this week with assemblies at each school. (ODOB)

Every student in grades K-4 received their own copy of, “The World According to Humphrey”, by Betty G. Birney, along with an activity pack with a two-week reading calendar, trivia questions and community game card. The students are to read the book each night as a family, turn in trivia questions to school according to the calendar and as a family, visit the local businesses by using the provided game board for extra chances to win prizes.

Thank you to all the elementary PTAs for also funding prizes and incentives for our schools to use during ODOB.

Special thanks to John Duber and Duber Automotive in Avon Lake. Duber generously donated funds to provide T-shirts for teachers, as well as bears (large and small) for each classroom. Each bear is adorned with a T-shirt featuring the Avon Lake logo, Duber logo, ODOB and the hashtag used for the initiative, #ALODOB19. The students are already enjoying reading to the bears as part of ODOB.

Duber Automotive is family-owned and operated, and the owner has made contributions in the past to many organizations in Avon Lake, as well as the school district.

“Anything we can do for the kids makes us happy and brings us joy,” said Duber. “I used to make up stories for my own children when they were little with the characters Willie and Billy Dubear. My kids loved hearing what the Dubears were going to do next. Reading and spending time together as a family is so important. That’s why this ODOB program is such a wonderful cause to promote.”

One District, One Book (ODOB) was made possible through generous donations from the Avon Lake City Schools Foundation and the following local businesses: Avon Lake Public Library, Buffalo Wild Wings, Divine Scoops, Duber Automotive, E&H Ace Hardware, Giant Eagle, Gitta’s Table, Las Cazuelas Mexican Restaurant, Marco’s Pizza, Marty’s Cycle Center, Parker’s Grille and Tavern, Randall’s Team Shop, Rio Coffee Brewery, Salad Kraze, Sherwin Williams, and Spevock’s Nautical Bowling Lanes.
