Bay Village Schools Athletics and Activities Director, Matt Spellman, announced that the district’s current school athletic conference, Great Lakes Conference (GLC) is scheduled to expand each of the next two years.
The GLC membership currently includes Bay Village, Elyria Catholic, Holy Name, Parma Senior, Normandy (Parma), Valley Forge (Parma) and Rocky River. This fall, the Conference will add Buckeye and Fairview. Then, for the 2019-20 school year, Lakewood will join as the 10th member.
The GLC began just four years ago when Avon, Lakewood, Midview, and North Ridgeville left the West Shore Conference to join the Southwestern Conference. Normandy, Parma Senior, and Valley Forge then left the Northeast Ohio Conference, which was disbanded shortly after. Holy Name came from the North Coast League to join the GLC.
Bay has competed against Buckeye, Fairvew, and Lakewood in many sports as non-conference opponents both during the regular season and in the OHSAA tournament, so there is some familiarity in Bay Village with the schools as athletic competitors. In addition, Fairview and Lakewood were both members of the West Shore Conference in past years.
“Buckeye, Fairview, and Lakewood provide great competitive opportunities for all schools in the GLC,” said Spellman. “They are close in proximity to most GLC schools. They provide outstanding facilities. And they each offer middle school teams for many sports, probably one of the biggest strengths of bringing them in.”
Bay High School Principal Jason Martin said he is also happy about the new schools in the conference. “We look forward to renewing some old rivalries and with creating new ones with the three new member schools,” he said. “This will provide a strong, 10-team conference”
