On 7-19-19 at approx. 7:58PM WPD received a call from Crocker Park Security reference 2 possible shoplifters who had exited the Apple Store. When Crocker Park Security made contact with the males in the Union St Garage, one of the males asked the security officers not to contact the police due to his outstanding warrants. When he realized they had contacted WPD one of the males entered a white Chevy Impala and fled the area. One of our responding officers located the Impala as it turned into a dead end alley adjacent to Dick’s Sporting Goods. The Impala backed into a WPD cruiser several times before the male operator exited his vehicle and hid behind dumpsters. Eventually the male entered Dicks Sporting Goods, apparently changed shirts, and hid again. Officers evacuated the store and located the suspect hiding in a stairwell. No officers were injured during the incident. The suspect was transported to the hospital in custody for an undisclosed medical issue. Suspected crack cocaine was located on scene and the investigation is continuing. The male in custody, a 27yo from Brooklyn, OH, has outstanding felony warrants. One of the warrants is from The Cuyahoga County Sheriff for dangerous drugs. The other was for a traffic offense through the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The 2nd male involved was identified and released.
7/23/19 update: The suspect has been charged with Felonious Assault and a $500,000 cash or surety bond has been assigned. Further charges are expected.
