The Avon High football team notched one of the biggest wins in program history as they captured the school’s third straight OHSAA Regional Championship in a 20-3 over Avon Lake in the Div. II Region 6 finals at North Ridgeville Ranger Stadium last Friday.
Decimated by injuries this season, Avon proved that success comes when preparation and opportunity converge. Avon’s younger players proved they were ready when the challenge came, and posted the signature win.
“Avon Head Coach Mike Elder pregame spoke about how everyone was doubting his team. Too many injuries they said, not enough depth they said. Avon just went out and showed their mettle, their toughness and now they get the chance to get the big one,” writes Reuben Rodriquez of Kee on Sports.
“The Shoremen had a perfect opportunity, one of the top defenses in the state, they were primed to go to the State finals for the first time since 2005. Authors of 6 shutouts this season, they felt they had the upper hand this time over their arch rivals, but it was not meant to be.
“The night belonged to both defenses. Avon showed theirs was every bit as good. Not withstanding, Shoremen star RB Gage Duesler ran for 116 yards on 14 first half carries, out gaining the entire Avon team, but the Eagle defense made the big stops when they had to.”
