Best of luck to three Avon High School and two Avon Middle School students who will be competing for Team Westshore in the 2020 Ohio High School Team Figure Skating Championships this coming weekend on Saturday and Sunday, February 8 and 9, at the Thornton Park Ice Arena (3301 Warrensville Center Road, Shaker Heights).
Last year Team Westshore, which had three Avon students returning for this year’s team, won the Second Place trophy out of 15 Ohio High Schools (public and private) who competed in this US Figure Skating sanctioned event. Team Westshore is a combined high school team consisting of high and middle school students from Avon (5 students = 3 high school students and 2 middle school students), Avon Lake (1 high school student, junior Rachel Sapola), Bay Village (1 high school student, senior Cecily Priemer), Rocky River (1 high school student, freshman Ruby Rauser), and Saint Joseph Academy (1 high school student, freshman Anastasia Migyanko ).
The five Avon students who will be competing are senior Kaelynn Higgins (on last year’s Second Place team and she will be recognized in the Senior Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, February 8), sophomore Caroline Biesterfeldt (on last year’s Second Place team), freshman Amy Klimkowski (on last year’s Second Place team), seventh-grader Catherine Biesterfeldt, and seventh-grader Danica Voll.
Each girl will compete in both individual and team events to earn medals, but also points for their placement which are all totaled at the end of the competition to determine the overall Ohio High School Team Figure Skating Champions. There are points earned for Team Spirit based on the team spirit audience participation for each team on Sunday. Public is invited to attend.
