Michael May to be Named Avon Lake High School Principal

The Avon Lake Board of Education will vote March 10 (meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the LA.K.E. center at Avon Lake High School) to extend a three-year administrative contract (effective Aug. 1, 2020) to Michael May to become the new principal at Avon Lake High School.

May comes to Avon Lake from the Maple Heights City School District where he is currently Director of Personnel, a position he has held for the past two years. Prior to joining a district central office staff, he was principal at Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst for five years. He served as an assistant principal at Westlake High School for five years, as well as an assistant principal at Vermilion High School for one year.

“I am excited to work with the administration, high school staff and students,” said May. “I hope to continue to build on the school’s high achievement in education, arts, acts of service and athletics while building a collaborative, positive culture. Avon Lake is an outstanding, supportive, community and the school district is one of the best in Ohio. I am proud to now be a part of this excellence.”

He began his teaching career in New Jersey before moving to the Cleveland area and working as a Social Studies teacher in Amherst. In addition to teaching, May has also coached high school basketball in Amherst and New Jersey. He was a member of the York College of Pennsylvania’s Men’s Basketball Team and served as captain his senior year.

May has earned history degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University and York College of Pennsylvania. He completed his second master’s degree at Wilmington University in Delaware focusing on School Leadership. He also holds a Superintendent’s Certification.

May resides in Amherst with his wife, Jessica, and young children Ethan and Bryn.
