City of Rocky River Resident Update – March, 20, 2020

Dear Residents,

The City of Rocky River continues to provide services to our community with priorities given to Health and Safety, Social Services and Refuse and Recycling. Below you will find useful updates from across the community:

Refuse and Recycling – All refuse and recycling services are continuing with no changes, adjustments may be necessary in future weeks dependent workforce availability. For safety purposes, the Service Department requests that all refuse be bagged securely. Visit the Service Department’s Facebook page for more information.

Scam Alert – Be alert to potential scams and individuals taking advantage of this national public health emergency. These scams may come in the form of emails, phone calls or door-to-door solicitations. Please contact the Rocky River Police Department if you believe you have experienced this activity.

Rocky River Senior Center – Senior citizens in need of assistance should contact the Senior Center staff at 440-899-6665 for any of the following needs (please leave a message and staff will return your call):

  • Seniors who cannot get out to get their prescriptions.
  • Seniors who cannot get out to get their groceries and need help.
  • Seniors in need can receive bags filled with non-perishable food items, household items such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and hygiene articles.
  • A book delivery program from the Center’s library is also available.

Senior Center Outreach Service will continue by phone calls only. Visit the Senior Center’s page on the City’s website and/or their Facebook page for timely updates.

Library – www.rrpl.org Rocky River Public Library’s Director, Jamie Mason, is encouraging patrons to take advantage of the library’s many digital offerings. Patrons of all ages can escape into a good book, movie, or music, thanks to the variety of content in OverDrive, hoopla, Kanopy, and AcornTV and adults or older teens will be able to learn something new with great resources such as Lynda.com or Creativebug through our Digital Library. Families can check out the digital services for our younger patrons to find their own books and shows on OverDrive, hoopla, Kanopy Kids, and TumbleBooks, or learn a new language with Little Pim in our Children’s Digital Library. These services, and many more, are available 24/7 with your RRPL library card, why not check them out and find your next favorite book and hobby?

Recreation Department – On the lighter side, please visit the department’s Facebook site – City of Rocky River Recreation – for tips, activities and fun fitness challenges to get you through extended time at home.

Chamber of Commerce – Please continue to support our local businesses as they have supported us and our civic organizations, schools and churches. Consult the Chamber’s website for up-to-date information about our local businesses.

Fly our Nation’s Flag – As Governor DeWine has asked, please fly our flag proudly at your home and business as a sign of unity with each other and in defiance against this pandemic.

Please continue to follow guidance to protect yourself, your families and others – social distancing; regular and thorough hand washing; coughing and sneezing hygiene; regular cleaning of surfaces, doorknobs, light switches, etc. If you find yourself having to stand in line, please practice a minimum of six feet social distancing.

It is important to repeat that we do not want social distancing to evolve into social isolation or social disengagement. Reach out to friends, family and neighbors as often as possible. If you do not currently have a neighborhood Facebook page, email chain or newsletter, think about creating one – perhaps a great project for the students who are looking for meaningful ways to help our community.

I want to thank our residents and our businesses for the tremendous acts of kindness and compassion extended to others within our community as well as outside of our community. And, the respect and thoughtfulness you have demonstrated for the safety of others throughout our community. Each day we have received inquiries about how individuals can be helpful. Today the best place is on your street, through your church, engaging with civic organizations, and supporting organizations with your philanthropic spirit. I so admire the dedicated efforts of so many – as has been said, “Not every hero wears a cape.” Thank you to all the heroes that surround us in so many profound ways.
